Hightower wins NACAC treasurer position


Queretaro, Mexico — IAAF Council member Stephanie Hightower on Tuesday was elected Treasurer of the North America Central America Caribbean Athletics Association (NACAC).


Hightower received 17 of the 30 valid votes cast, winning over Evelyn Farrell (Aruba) and Alfred Emmanuel (St. Lucia). Farrell, the President of the Aruba Athletics Federation, received 9 votes while Emmanuel, St. Lucia Olympic Committee Secretary General, received 4 votes.


“I am honored to take this position and will strive to bring resources and to use my sports, as well as my business acumen so that the entire NACAC region grows and becomes more prosperous,” said Hightower. “This region is the strongest athletically in the world and I hope to aid member federations create revenue streams so that athletes may train at the highest level, with the best resources and support.” 


A world indoor and American outdoor record-setter in the women’s indoor hurdles and an Olympian, Hightower serves as a highly respected IAAF Council member since 2015. She is the Chair of the Women’s Equity Committee and Chair of the Conflict Resolution Committee. She was elected president of USA Track & Field in 2008 and served in that capacity for 6 years. She led the federation’s efforts to better serve the sport of athletics internationally, working closely with IAAF leaders as well as colleagues in fellow federations. As an athlete, she was part of 10 U.S. international teams, and later was U.S. women’s team manager at the 2004 Olympic Games, assistant manager at the 1996 Games and U.S. team leader at the 2005 IAAF World Youth Championships. She was chef de mission at the 2003 IAAF World Championships and head team manager at the 1999 IAAF World Championships.  She has served USATF committees in many capacities, including Athletes Advisory Committee and Women’s Track & Field, where she was chair. 


She is the President & CEO of the Columbus Urban League and has served as Board President of the Columbus City Schools and Vice President of Advancement at the Columbus College of Art and Design.
