Ewert sets junior record to win USATF Athlete of the Week


Taylor Ewert (Beavercreek, Ohio) broke her own American junior record in the 3,000m race walk to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.


Ewert, the 2018 USATF Youth Athlete of the Year, won the VA Showcase in Lynchburg, Virginia, clocking 13:24.76. Her previous American junior record was 13:31.79, set at the 2018 Penn Relays en route to an AJR in the 5,000m walk. Ewert also set a high school indoor national record, trimming more than 20 seconds off the standard she set last year. She will next compete at the Millrose Games on Feb. 9 in the USATF mile walk championships.


Other notable performances from the past weekend:

Emily Sisson — Sisson narrowly missed the American record in the half marathon at Houston, clocking 67:30 to finish fifth. It was the second fastest time ever run by an American woman, and was only five seconds off the 67:25 recorded by Molly Huddle in 2018.

Grant Holloway — Twice in one weekend at Clemson, Florida’s Holloway ran 7.49 for the 60m hurdles, equaling the No. 5 all-time collegiate performance. Holloway also clocked 20.69 to win the 200m and contributed the fastest 4x400 leg (45.62) for the Gators’ winning 3:04.74 relay.

Keturah Orji — American indoor record holder Orji bounded 14.39m/47-2.5 at Clemson, the second best indoor triple jump ever by an American woman.

Donavan Brazier — Brazier moved to fifth on the U.S. all-time 600m list with his 1:15.46 at the Texas A&M Triangular. It was his first race since the World Indoor Championships last March 2.

Jordan Gray — Gray, a senior at Kennesaw State, scored 4,218 points to win the pentathlon at the Samford Multis, the highest score by an American woman this season.

Solomon Simmons — The decathlon runner-up at last year’s USATF Outdoor Championships, Simmons won the Samford Multis heptathlon with a score of 5,825, the highest by an American this season.

Now in its 18th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
