Dixon sets collegiate record to win USATF Athlete of the Week


Devin Dixon (McDonough, Georgia) broke the men’s American collegiate record in the 800m to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.


Dixon, a junior at Texas A&M, became the third fastest American man ever indoors and the fastest American collegian ever with his 1:45.27 at the Texas Tech Classic in Lubbock. His time is also the fastest in the world in 2019 and clipped .61 seconds off the previous American collegiate record set in 1999 by Missouri’s Derrick Peterson. Only Johnny Gray’s American record 1:45.00 and the 1:45.10 by Dixon’s former Aggie teammate, Donavan Brazier, are above him on the U.S. all-time list.


Other notable performances from the past weekend:

Matthew Forgues — Forgues battled through warm conditions in Santee, Calif., to win the USATF men’s 50km race walk championships in 4:27:28.

Robyn Stevens — Stevens was the women’s winner at the USATF 50km race walk championships, finishing in 4:34:24.

Payton Otterdahl — The North Dakota State senior became only the third collegian to throw the indoor shot 71 feet with his 21.64m/71-0 toss at Nebraska.

Katelyn Tuohy — Tuohy broke the national high school indoor 3,000m record with her 9:01.81 at the Dr. Sander Invitational in New York.

Maggie Ewen — Ewen moved to No. 6 on the all-time U.S. indoor women’s shot out list with her 19.28m/63-3.25 win at the New Balance Grand Prix.

Katie Nageotte — Nageotte pole vaulted to the world lead at the New Balance GP, clearing 4.86m/15-11.25 and beating reigning Olympic and world champion Ekaterini Stefanidi.

Bill Jankovich — Jankovich smashed the American men’s masters 85-89 record in the heptathlon with a score of 3,919 points at the USATF Masters Indoor Combined Events Championships in Kenosha.

Angela Herzner — Herzner added almost 300 points to the American women’s masters 40-44 heptathlon record, scoring 4,834 at the USATF Masters Indoor Combined Events Championships.

Now in its 18th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
