Claye’s Paris DL triple jump record earns him USATF Athlete of the Week honors

8/28/2019

INDIANAPOLIS -- Will Claye (Crestview, Arizona) set a meet record the men’s triple jump at the Paris Diamond League meet to earn USATF Athlete of the Week for the second time this year.

Claye, a two-time Olympic silver medalist and owner of the world’s longest triple jump in 2019, went 18.06m/59-3 in the fifth round to seal his first Diamond League win over reigning Olympic and World champion Christian Taylor since the 2014 Oslo Bislett Games. Claye took the lead on his first attempt and never relinquished it, going 17.71m/58-1.25 in the fourth round before his big leap. His winning mark equaled the fifth-best jump in U.S. history, and besides Claye, only Taylor and Kenny Harrison have ever jumped farther among Americans. Taylor equaled his season best with a 17.82m/58-5.75 effort in round five.
