Flemington, N.J. — On a near perfect day for cross country, a record 450 athletes competed in the 2013 USA Masters 5 km Cross Country Championships
at Deer Path Park in Flemington, N.J. The previous record participation for this championship was in 2003 when 282 athletes toed the line in Holmdel, N.J. It was a banner day for the athletes from the Atlanta Track Club as they claimed four (4) individual titles and a team title.
Athletes competed for national titles in 5 year age division with team competition being scored in 10-year divisions (40 yrs.+, 50 yrs.+, 60 yrs.+, 70 yrs. +, and 80 yrs.+). Additionally athletes were scored based on age-grading performances. The championships were hosted by USATF New Jersey for the fifth time.
(Northport Running Club), 62, of Northport, N.Y., and Peter Magill
(Cal Coast TC), 52, of South Pasadena, Calf. turned in the top performances on the day, based on the age-graded performances scoring tables. Martin ran 19:46 to capture the women's 60-64 division title and a 99.60% age-graded performance. Magill won the 50-54 division in with a time of 15:57 which scored 94.03%. Martin and Magill each won $400 and a Tissot watch worth $600.

, 47, (Decatur, Ga. / Atlantic TC), Ken Youngers
, 57,(Tucker, Ga./Atlanta, TC ), Chad Newton
, 44, (Pisgah, N.C. / Atlanta TC), and Steve Kartalia
, 48, (Westminster, Md. / Baltimore-Washington AC). Newton's win was his third 5 km national title of the year. Earlier this year he won the 5,000m title at the Masters Outdoor Championships in Olathe and two weeks ago won the 5 km road title in Syracuse.
All scored 90% or higher. McCormack won the men's 60-64 title running 17:17 (92.83%). Blaich won the 45-49 division in a time of 15:41 (91.90%). Youngers ran 17:05 to capture the 55-59 division (91.50%). Newton's 15:31 was the fastest overal time of the day to win the 40-44 division and a 90.74% age-graded performance. Kartalia ran 16:05 and recorded an age-graded performance of 90.30%
In the women's championship races two other women besides Martin scored over 90%. Erika Campbell
(North Jersey Masters), 64, finished second to Martin in the 60-64 division running 21:33 (94.08%). Sylvie Kimche
(Central Park TC - New Balance), 66, won 65-69 division in a time of 22:54 (91.26%).
