Andersen’s hammer world lead wins her USATF Athlete of the Week

6/5/2019

Brooke Andersen (Manhattan, Kansas) moved to third on the all-time U.S. women’s hammer list to earn USATF Athlete of the Week.

Andersen won the Iron Wood Throws Classic at Rathdrum, Idaho, with a best of 76.75m/251-9, the farthest throw in the world this year and the eighth-farthest performance in American history. The NCAA runner-up the past two years for Northern Arizona, Andersen was third at the USATF Outdoors in 2018 and finished sixth in the 20-pound weight throw at the USATF Indoors in February. Her series at Rathdrum included a 76.33m/250-5 in the final round that ranks as the 10th-best throw in U.S. history, and she is behind only DeAnna Price and Gwen Berry on the all-time American performer list.

Other notable performances from the previous week:

Brad Barton - Barton, 53, broke the world men’s 50-55 mile record with a 4:19.59 at the Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville.
