85-year-old Meiler highlights day two at USATF Masters Outdoor Championships

AMES, Iowa -- One American record wasn’t enough for Florence Meiler as she claimed two and a world record enroute to her two national titles at Bill and Karen Bergan Track on the campus of Iowa State University. The world’s best athletes ranging from 30 to 96 years of age are among the more than 900 athletes competing at ISU’s Cyclone Sports Complex this week.

Within an hour timeframe Friday morning, 85-year-old Florence Meiler (Sprintcity) took down two American records and then a world record in the afternoon. Meiler claimed her first age-group record at 8:30am in the discus with her second round throw of 16.82m/55-2. She then turned to the track in an incredible display of versatility clocking 19.13.27 in the 85-59 2000m steeplechase. Meiler holds numerous world and American indoor records and is the current outdoor world record holder in the W75-79 and 80-84 pole vault. Meiler returned once again to claim the first age group world record in the 80m hurdles with a time of 26.98.

 

Multiple world and American record holder, Neringa Jakstiene (Unattached) won the 55-59 age group long jump clearing 4.90m/16-1 on her first attempt to claim the national title. Jakstiene then turned to the track to win the 80m short hurdles clocking 12.88, missing the American record by .01 (12.87).

 

Adding to the American record count was the 75-79 Non-club 80m Shuttle Hurdle Relay with Michael Burns (Prairie Striders TC), David Marovich (Philadelphia Masters TC), Howard Booth (Unattached) and Thomas Gomillion (ITS Track Club) clocking 1:18.76, the first age-group American record.

 

Olympian Willie Banks (Unattached) won the high jump in the 60-64 age group, clearing 1.70m/5-7. Banks was a perfect three for three on his attempts to claim the national title.

 

Khalid Mulazim (Southwest Sprinters Track Club), American record holder in the event, clocked 51.84 in the 50-54 400m, just missing his 2017 record time of 51.13.
