New Race Day Communications Concept
With a special offer from Global Crossing, USATF encourages events to explore using race-day conference calls as a tool to communicate with their race personnel in the field. Cell phones are used to link into a conference call, which provides the means for managers and volunteers to remain connected throughout the event. One important example of how this function can be used is by having all of the timers who are out on the course be part of a conference call so they all hear the gun at the start of the race. Such a call would ensure that clocks on the course are synchronized and providing accurate split times.
Managers also can provide volunteers with last-minute instructions or communicate changes to deal with developing situations, while volunteers can easily report on urgent needs and provide necessary updates. Given that most races are held on weekends, when cell phone service is usually free, costs to volunteers and officials will be held in check.
This service also can be utilized to improve pre-event planning. Instead of incurring travel costs to bring key event staff together, they can simply pick up their phones and listen, learn, and contribute via a conference call.
About the Conference Call Service
Using your existing phone service, Global Crossing will create a forum in which to meet.
Conference call participants will be provided a toll-free number to access the conference call. The only cost is the 5.5 cents per person per minute charge, which is paid by the event. There are no set-up fees, no minimums, and no service fees. The calls can be monitored and recorded by event management to maintain security and be replayed by event staff that may have missed the meeting. An event can have many conference calls in progress simultaneously, committee by committee, each using a different access code.
This service will be available only for USATF Sanctioned events (valid sanction number will be required to activate the service at the discounted rate) for a 3-week period before, during, and after the event. To learn more about this service, visit the "Special offers & discounts" page for sanctioned events.
