Course Info

Mission Bay Park

The course is located in Mission Bay Park at the very south end of East Mission Bay Drive, adjacent to the Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa. This is known as the “Tecolote Shores” section of the park. If you are driving, the course can be reached by taking Interstate 5, exit at Sea World Drive and go west, turn right on East Mission Bay Drive and drive approximately 1/3 mile to park.

The races will be run over a spectator-friendly, European-style 2,000 meter grass loop running along East Mission Bay Park. The terrain during the first 1,000 meters of the loop is primarily flat and very fast. During the second 1,000 meters of the loop the course includes a series of five small hills. The average width of the course is 10 meters and there are a few sections where the course briefly narrows to about 5 meters in width. This course was also used for the 2008 & 2011 USATF Cross Country National Championships.

2020 Pan Am Cross Country Selection Procedures

Team sizes, Eligibility Criteria, and Selection Procedures are as follows for the 2020 Pan Am Cross Country Championships to be held on February 29, 2020 in Victoria, Canada.

Events Being Contested/Distances

  • Under 20 Women: 6 km
  • Under 20 Men: 8 km
  • Senior Women: 10 km
  • Senior Men: 10 km

Passport Requirement

Proof of possession of a valid passport good for at least 6 months past the return date from the Pan Am Cross Country Championships will be required at Team Processing on January 18, 2020. Accordingly, athletes MUST bring with them when they enter the Team Processing area their passport or a photocopy of their passport, should they be selected for Team at the 2020 USATF Cross Country Championships.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible to be a member of the Team, an athlete must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States and, under USATF and IAAF rules, be eligible to represent the USA at all levels of international competitions.
  • Be a USA Track & Field member in good standing at the time of the selection through the end of the 2020 Pan Am Cross Country Championships.
  • Possess a valid passport that does not expire within six (6) months of the 2020 Pan Am Cross Country Championships (and must present passport at team processing)
  • Sign a USATF Athlete Statement of Conditions for participation, if nominated for the Team.
  • Under 20 athletes must be under the age of 20, but at least 16 years of age on December 31, 2020 (born in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004).

The following procedures will be used to select Senior and Under 20 athletes:

  • Up to six (6) athletes who meet the eligibility requirements listed above will select themselves onto Team USATF for the Pan Am Cross Country Championships based on descending order of finish in the relevant event at the USATF Cross Country Championships on January 18, 2020.
  • Athletes must commit to a position on Team USA during Team Processing on January 18, 2020, by completing team processing paper work including a signed USATF Athlete Statement of Conditions or they will forfeit their place on that squad.
  • If an athlete declines a position on Team USA (or fails to commit as per #2 above), that position will then be offered to the next finisher in the relevant race at the selection event until the team is filled. An athlete declining a position must submit a signed decline form.
  • Team Size: Team USATF will field a squad consisting of up to six (6) athletes per race as long as each team member finishes in the top 25 in that race at the USATF Cross Country Championships on January 18.
  • If a particular Team USATF squad is not filled from among the top 25 finishers at the selection event, the USATF Cross Country Council, in consultation with the National Office, reserves the right to fill the squad size to one (1) athlete more than the number of scoring positions in each race at the 2020 Pan Am Cross Country Championships.
  • Alternates: Alternates will select themselves following the above procedures and be named to the team if a drop-out occurs prior to a final date set by the Cross Country Council chair in consultation with the National Office.
  • Alteration: USATF reserves the right, based on consultation with the USOC and the State Department, to alter the conditions of travel for this team trip or to cancel the trip if conditions in the host country warrant.

Removal of Athletes

An athlete who is to be nominated to the team by USATF may be removed as a nominee for any of the following reasons, as determined by USATF:

  • Voluntary withdrawal. Athlete must submit a written letter via email to Kimberly Sims, Associate Director of International Teams at Kimberly.Sims@usatf.org .
  • Injury or illness as certified by a physician (or medical staff) approved by USATF. If an athlete refuses verification of his/her illness or injury by a physician (or medical staff) approved by USATF, his/her injury will be assumed to be disabling and he/she may be removed.
  • Violation of USATF’s Athlete Statement of Conditions.
  • Involuntary Withdrawal. An Athlete who is named to the team by virtue of an error or oversight (by USATF) may be removed from the team at any time.
