Hawkins had a heart murmur as a child and was not allowed to compete in sports until eighth gradehurdle great Jack Pierce, now retired from competition, has started working with him lately and says, "There's a world of potential there"at times, Hawkins has been bitter about his lack of recognition in the United States, contrasted with Europe, where he races very frequentlystill, he says what keeps him in the sport is his basic enjoyment of it: "I enjoy training. I enjoy running the hurdles, win-lose-or-draw. I always joke about it. I have fun when I do it."
