I have marshaled this race for several years, and I am running it (well, run/walking) for the first time, in 2017. It is a beautiful course, one I would recommend to anyone.
As far as the negative reaction from locals, ignore it. This race is and has been well-advertised for years, the closures (which are few) and potential delay areas are mentioned on radio and in the newspaper, and there are signs along the entire route for at least three weeks prior. Between all this and the fact that this race has been occurring for decades, there is no excuse for people to say they had no idea. The negative reaction comes largely from the self-absorbed who would rather complain than to leave a little earlier, plan a different route to their destination, or (perish the thought) wait the few minutes it takes for the pack of runners to go by.
This is as wonderful course. There are just enough hills to make it interesting and enough turns to eliminate monotony. There is a variety of sights and terrain along the way:Lincoln's Home and Tomb, Washington and Lincoln Parks, diverse neighborhoods, paved and brick streets. The people along the route and the race officials were very supportive and the hydration stations were plentiful and easy to access. It is worth the long drive to Springfield for this great event. Keep up the excellent work!

I am looking forward to my second LPHM this weekend. Last year's event was one of the most fun things I have ever done. Great job Springfield! The course was wonderful, the fans along the route were encouraging, the expo and organization were top-notch. Thanks for sharing your wonderful city and fine citizens at a beautiful time of the year. I am bring several others along this year to enjoy the morning on the streets of Springfield and to visit the Lincoln sites. Excellent event and a great job by all involved!
