I've run the marathon 3 times and cheered for friends twice in the last 5 years. parking: You can park just about any side street and cheer for the runners. This morning, I parked at mile 14, 15,16,18, 22 and 26 (on lake drive, close to veterans park, less than half a mile from the finish line) to cheer for my 4 friends who ran the marathon.
course: starts out at Grafton and meanders through the country side and the burbs. After about mile 15, the course goes on the lake drive where you see beautiful houses on either sides. After mile 22, you get peeks of lake Michigan on your left and the last 3.5 miles you feel like you are run on the shores of the lake. The last 3.5 miles are indeed beautiful and you would see most people in this stretch out to cheer runners. The course is relatively flat (compared to New England, it is wicked flat) although it depends on the individual. Finish line is fun, you have free massages, beer, sandwiches, and get a beautiful view of the lakefront and the downtown. The medals and T-shirts have typically gotten better with each marathon. 2012 was probably the best medal yet. T-shirt is probably one of the best you will get, among all races I have run (marathons and half marathons).
price used to be $55 but just last year was hiked up to $80 (still a lot more competitive than a lot of the other marathons).
A couple of years ago, they introduced pace groups which is awesome if you want to run at a certain speed or just to keep company.
As long as the weather holds up in the mid 50's to 60's, you will have a lot of fun..
well organized race, not too many spectators until towards the end, water stops are well manned and well organized, last 3.5 miles is really the best part according to me.
I would definitely recommend the run.
Very flat course, except for a single hwy overpass. The last 5 miles along lakefront are awesome. Strongly recommended race for those seeking a PR.

Does anyone know if this course is accessible for bikers to ride semi-near the route and pop in to cheer on a runner?
