Hook Mountain Trail Run

Distance: 8.71 miles / 14.02 km
Location: Start: Dutchtown, Haverstraw, NY
Adj. to Rockland Lake and continues to Nyack Beach - Haverstraw, NY, US
Attributes: out & back, mixed flat & hills, unpaved path
Description: Since this is oout and back you can start at either end here. You can start on the trailhead at the end of Riverside Ave in the Dutchtown Section of Haverstraw and continue along a scenic main trail along the widest part of the Hudson River. Trail ends at Nyack Beach in Upper Nyack. Conversely, you can start at Nyack Beach and end in Dutchtown. Views of the sail boats, sky writers and the Tappan Zee Bridge (and a small view of the NYC skyline on a very clear day in the distance) Parking is available on either end of the trail but the Nyack Beach entrance you must pay like 5 or 6 dollars. The Haverstraw end is free but VERY limited parking at trail head, especially in nice weather. If you park in the street on Riverside Ave you risk getting towed/boots since the road is quite narrow. Drive slow on Riverside Ave, children and pets play there. On the trail beware, you share trail with bikers and unleashed dogs!

This is a great run with some beautiful views. For the first 1.5 miles (heading from Nyack to Haverstraw), you're right on the water, so if the weather or wind isn't great, it could get brutal. The nyack parking lot can be a bit tough to find - heading north on 9W, turn right on Main Street (left if heading south on 9W), then left on broadway. The lot and park entrance is on the end of broadway. Most of the town has a speed limit of 15MPH, so please respect the locals. When I was there, there was no charge for parking, but that may go into effect for peak season. A fabulous run with great hills, good views, and nice packed gravel and dirt paths. A great change from city running!
