INDIANAPOLIS -Megan Venables (Blackwood, N.J.) has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the Group 3 individual championship Saturday at the NJSIAA/Star-Ledger/M-F Athletic Group Championships in Holmdel Township, N.J.

A Highland Regional High School star, Venables broke the 27-year-old Holmdel Park state meet record when she won the Group 3 individual championship in 17:28. Her winning margin was an astonishing 1:40 over the runner-up. The previous record of 17:35 was set by Janet Smith in 1983.

Now in its ninth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
