Wednesday morning session Team USA quotes |
Women's 1500m first round Treniere Clement (Knoxville, TN): My goal was to make it back and that's what I did. I watched the men's races and I knew it would be like that. My coach and I worked on a lot of negative splitting of going out slow and coming back really hard. I feel I'm prepared. My coach prepared me for that. Coach said if you ran inside, there will be an opening. You just got to know your surroundings, wait until it opens and make your move. I tried to stay calm. It was hard to. The opening came late in the race, in the last 300. There was a group that went and just tried to stay in contact. I tried to kick as hard as I could in the last 100. I feel really good. It builds up my confidence. Christin Wurth Thomas (Springdale, AR): I didn't go out and run aggressively. I kind of let them run away from me. That's something I have been working on. I didn't feel good out there, but that's no excuse. I should have been more competitive. I thought I was ready. I got out there and it was hard. Erin Donohue (Haddenfield, NJ): The leader was at about 70 (seconds) at the quarter and I was at 71, 72. I got going at the end. I was hurting but I made sure I got the top six and made it through. I have been really confident in workouts and training going in. I just knew with 300 to go, I had to take a look around and see where I needed to be. I'm going to work on recovering, run the same way and put myself in position to dig down and see what I have left. Women's javelin throw qualifying Dana Pounds (Colorado Springs, CO): It was a little rough. I started out at 50 meters and went to 55 on my second throw. I was hoping to come out with the [Olympic] A standard. I showed up with bronchitis here this week. I thought I had it [the A standard] in me, but it didn't happen. I had some technical things that went wrong. It's definitely disappointing but this is my first time at a World Championships meet. I think I have to change a little bit of my competitive season. It's been a really long season, going through the end of August. Men's long jump qualifying Dwight Phillips (Snellville, GA): I qualified on my first jump. It was pretty easy. I just look forward to tomorrow. Miguel Pate (Tuscaloosa, AL): It was pretty stressful, to be honest with you. I wanted to qualify to get to the next day. As long as I made it to the next day, that's the goal, and that's what happened. I don't want to put any expectations on us, but we're going to jump good. Trevell Quinley (Sacramento, CA): I will never put myself in the situation that I put myself in today. I was the twelfth qualifier and it came down to the final jump and being the last jumper. My heart rate never beat so fast. It was first world championship jitters in the first two rounds, and I got that out of my system. I'm ready for the final. Walter Davis (Baton Rouge, LA): It was hard trying to come back from the triple jump. The track is kind of hard, from all that pounding, and my body just couldn't take it. I didn't make the final because of the triple jump. I think I'm going to leave the long jump alone and focus on the triple jump next year. I'm focusing on the triple jump and the world record. Women's 200m first round: Allyson Felix (Santa Clarita, CA): It went well. I've been waiting around a long time, so I wanted to get out there and win as easy as possible. I've been watching my teammates and spending time with my family. [Asked about pressure as the favorite]: I guess [there is] a little bit, but I have really high expectations of myself. I wanted to go out there and kind of get my legs moving so I can come back to night. Sanya Richards (Austin, TX): I was so anxious to get back on the track. I felt really easy, really strong, and I tried to conserve my energy until tonight. It's been really hard to watch the 400. They're running really fast and I know it's going to be a fast final. That's depressing, butI think the 200 is going to be exciting, too. I really wanted to get my start consistent. I know coach Hart is going to say I popped up. The next round I'm going to focus on the first 50 and do what I need to advance. Torri Edwards (Corona, CA): I feel pretty good. I wanted to get back out there and focus on the 200. I haven't taken time to think about it [the 100m final]. I want to put it behind me and focus on the 200. I'm over it. LaShaunte'a Moore (Akron, OH): Of course, my goal coming in is to get a medal. I'm excited to get started. The [two] false starts kind of threw me off a little bit. I wanted to out there and try to win my heat as easy as possible. Men's 110m hurdles first round Terrence Trammell (Ellenwood, GA): I felt OK. I knew that somebody was going to try to run a season best or lifetime best, so my goal was just to come out, get a feel for the race and the atmosphere and make it through. I think my biggest thing was just getting a feel for the competition and the meet. I've been around here for about 2 and a half weeks, so I was just tired of waiting. David Oliver (Orlando, FL): It was a rough go today. My hamstring grabbed on me around the sixth or seventh hurdle. I hope my time's good enough to get me through to the next round. David Payne (Cincinnati, Ohio): I'm amazed that I'm here. I got a call two days ago to get on a plane, so I'm here. I'm going to go make the best of it. I got into town last night. I'm very happy with my race. I slept pretty good coming over here, but I need a few more hours to get fully adjusted to the time. |
