Evening session Team USA quotes - August 27, 2007 |
Women's 100m Final: Torri Edwards (Corona, Calif.): I think I got out well. The transition was OK. Toward the end, I kind of faded. Unfortunately, I didn't get the win. I'll have to go back and look at the race and see what happened. I knew I didn't have first or second, but I thought I had third. I saw those people in front of me. Definitely we have a shot at the relay. I always knew that. Hopefully we get that. Lauryn Williams (Miami, Fla.): I think the adrenaline gets me going, my heart beats so fast that it maybe activates the fast, quick muscles. It's something about the big events that do or die, and I did. I was just hoping, I did a lot of praying in those few minutes in hoping that God would shine down on me and I could be a gold medalist again. I wasn't sure what happened. I was watching the replay. I couldn't decide for myself who I thought had won. I'm really excited. Where I came from this season, to be in contention for the photo finish and be in contention for the gold medal, I'm not at all upset about the silver. I think things are turning around, and taking a turn for the better. I got the negative things out of the way, I'm excited about Beijing and I plan to focus on getting healthy. Carmelita Jeter (Long Beach, Calif.): My coach Larry Wade told me, 'you're going to get a medal, period.' Somebody told me what got you here will keep you here. I'm doing what I've been doing and I'm on the (awards) stand now. It was a good race, it was a very good race. It was a tight race and I knew it was going to come down to the line. I knew that, and I knew that I was going to have to put as much neck and arm and shoulder and foot in as possible. It was a good run. It was a personal best, I ran 11.02, and after rounds I can't be upset about that at all. When I walked out here I was smiling because I knew it was my turn and I knew I was gonna get it, period. Women's 100m Semifinal: Mechelle Lewis (Raleigh, N.C.): It was a good season. I tried my best and I gave it everything I had. I got out the best I could, but unfortunately there was a few people ahead of me. I kept my composure and kept going and got to at least fifth, and unfortunately they only take the top four. It was a good experience to get through these rounds in international competition. Men's 1,500m Semifinal: Bernard Lagat (Tucson, Ariz.): The race went OK. It went actually the way I wanted it. I didn't want to get into trouble today, running from the back all the way. At some point I got boxed in. I had to get myself out of it. I managed to get out and run the last 200 meters really hard. (The pace) didn't really matter to me. I knew it was terrible slow. I wanted to run the way it is. Alan Webb (Reston, Va.): I wasn't aggressive enough at the start. I had to do something I don't like doing, being in the back the whole time. It almost cost me a spot in the final. That's why you don't do that. I knew I was really close. I tried to count the guys. The last 50, I tried to stay as relaxed as I could. It was hard and there was so much going on. I just didn't want to get left out. Men's triple jump Final: Aarik Wilson (Bloomington, Ind.): Tough day at the office. I got a little excited and I got ahead of myself. But oh well. I'm happy for everybody. The people had big jumps today. It was a good competition. I tried to force it a little too much. I rushed it, got excited and ended up fifth. This was a good experience for next year. Walter Davis (Baton Rouge, La): I got a season's best. I got on the podium. I wanted to defend my title. It just didn't happen. I was all over the runway. My runway wasn't down like it was last time due to injuries. I got on the podium. I wasn't even picked to get on the podium. I'm not satisfied, but I got on the podium. Women's 400m Semifinal: Natasha Hastings (St. Alban, N.Y.): I got out pretty good but didn't have the kick in the end to finish and get enough position to make it to the final. I felt great and I was very positive. I felt that I could make it to the final or maybe take home the gold, so I'm very disappointed right now. DeeDee Trotter (Knoxville, Tenn.): Some good and some bad. The good part is that I did run 50.31, which is the fastest time I've run since USAs. I'm excited about the race tonight, though my place put me in a slight predicament for getting through the qualifying round, but I made it through and that gives me the opportunity to know that I'll run much faster in the final no matter what lane I get. Mary Wineberg (Cincinnati): My goal coming into the race was win my heat or place top two, and that's what I wanted to do to set me up for the final and I'm real excited about it. It's my first worlds, my first final and I want to medal. I'm confident that I can get a medal and I'm just ready for it. Men's 10,000m Final: Abdi Abdirahman (Tucson, Ariz.): It went ok up until about five laps to go. I wasn't hurting, but I started getting blisters on my heels. Galen Rupp (Portland, Ore.): Felt ok coming into this. Dathan and I were working together; I just didn't hold up my end of the deal. This race shows you how hard you have to work. I didn't have the greatest of days, but this was a good experience. Hopefully I can improve on this next year. Dathan Ritzenhein (Boulder, Colo.): I have to go back and look at my training to see what I can do differently. I didn't think anybody would take it out hard tonight. I was pretty shocked that it went out that way. |
