Field events highlight day four at USA Youth Outdoor Champs

LISLE, Ill. - Three athletes made their way to the top of the medal stand for a second time Friday at the 2007 USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Benedictine University.

Alex Gochenour (Missouri City, Iowa) cleared a height of 1.60 meters/5 feet 3 inches to win the youth girls' high jump. On Tuesday, Gochenour was crowned the champion of the pentathlon. Shanice Stewart (San Bernardino, Calif.) was the runner-up in the high jump with a clearance of 1.55m/5-1, while pentathlon runner-up Cadijah Harris (Chandler, Ariz.) took third with the same height.

Young men's triple jump champion Troy Doris (Bolingbrook, Ill.) won the long jump title with a leap of 7.18m/23-6.75. The runner-up was Brandon McCallister (Harvey, Ill.), who jumped 7.02m/23-0.5.

Brittany Borman (DeSoto, Mo.) also picked up her second championship by throwing 41.94m/137-7 to win the young women's discus. Borman won the shot put title Thursday. Kristian Trent (Omaha, Neb.) was second with a throw of 37.52m/123-1.

One centimeter determined the championship in the intermediate girls' long jump. Karynn Dunn (Diamond Bar, Calif.) jumped 5.74m/18-10 to edge out Samantha Collins (Mesa, Ariz.), who took second with a leap of 5.73m/18-9.75.

Kasen Covington (Boise, Idaho), last year's youth boys' triple jump champion, moved up to the intermediate boys' division and won the title with a leap of 14.00m/45-11.25. Craig Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) jumped 13.25m/43-5.75 to take second.

In the bantam boys' high jump, Jacob Wayda (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) was the champion with a height of 1.30m/4-3.25. Blake Green (Granada Hills, Calif.) cleared the same height, but ended up in second place.

Devin Bogert (Tomball, Texas) threw 52.93m/173-8 to win the youth boys' javelin. Javan Gray (Springfield, Ore.) finished second with a throw of 52.27m/171-6.

The USA Youth Championships will continue Saturday with finals in the 3,000m, 200m, 800m and 4x100m relay, as well as several field events. Prelims for all of the hurdle events are also scheduled.
