Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon launches youth running program

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota -The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon (MTCM) has announced a youth running program to promote exercise among Minnesota children and to provide families with resources on how to exercise together. The Medtronic TC Kids Marathon will serve as the cornerstone of a shared mission between Twin Cities Marathon, Inc. and Medtronic to support and inspire healthy lifestyles, especially among children.

The program got off to a running start Tuesday with more than 200 children from the St. Paul Parks and Recreation Department taking the first steps in a six-week "progressive marathon" training program where participants will run 26 miles one mile at a time. Participants will be invited to run mile 26 at one of the family events during marathon weekend, Sept. 29- Oct. 1.

As part of the reward of training, Virginia Brophy Achman, Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon executive director invites children and their families to run together in the Medtronic Family Events, which include a half-mile, one-mile and 5km run/walk races. Younger children also can take part in the "Diaper Dash" and "Toddler Trot." All of the events will take place in St. Paul on the State Capitol grounds on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The 2006 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon will take place Oct. 1, 2006 and will once again host the USA Marathon Championships featuring some of the U.S. top open men, women and masters marathoners.

Chevron Houston Marathon Partners with Former Champion to Develop Online Training Program

HOUSTON, Texas - Sean Wade, winner of the 2003 Houston Marathon and a 1996 Olympic marathoner, has developed a Web-based training program to help runners in the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon achieve their personal goals. The races will be run Sunday, January 14, 2007.

Employing Wade's "train smarter, not harder" philosophy, the online training program provides specific half-marathon and marathon training for beginner, intermediate and experienced runners. The program emphasizes getting participants to the starting line injury-free with workouts designed to prepare runners to reach their specific goals.

Wade has placed in the top five in the Chevron Houston Marathon five times, winning the race in 2003 and running a personal record of 2 hours, 10 minutes in the 1996 race. He is currently competing as one of the world's top masters distance runners. Wade has spent the past 10 years coaching runners through his training group, The Kenyan Way.

The Chevron Houston Marathon is a Silver Sponsor of the USA Distance Project presented by the New York Road Runners will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2007 while hosting the USA Half Marathon Championships and is the nation's premier winter marathon, annually attracting participants from all 50 U.S. states and more than 30 foreign countries.
