Sunday athlete quotes - in progress |
Men's Javelin Throw Champion- Breaux Greer: "I hope to get 10 [U.S. championships] in a row. I was at 60 percent speed, so I wasn't expecting it to go that far. The last U.S. competition, my shoulder was out of socket. This thing felt like death. I just sort of deal with it. I'm definitely throwing again and going to the World Cup. I need to get home and go back into rehab. I think if I was healthy, I would be hell on wheels. I got lucky, I was really easy today. " Men's 110mH Heat 2- Dominique Arnold: "We have enough time. Now I could do another set in two hours. This is the best race because the first couple of races I didn't finish. I stay down and stay patient. You don't have to do much on this track. I slowed down and controlled myself. I don't think of things such as rain delays. I've been trained in hard conditions, so this is wonderful." Men's 110mH Heat 2- Allen Johnson: "It was bad, just a bad race. When I saw (Dominique) Arnold in front of me, I knew Ididn't have it." Men's 3000m Steeplechase Champion- Dan Lincoln: "It never gets old. It's fun, that's why I'm still in the sport. It's great that I am able to coordinate everything. It's just time management, wake up each morning and plan your day; people have more time than you think. I am going to Europe tomorrow, where I am going to run four races." Women's 800m Champion- Hazel Clark: "I had a clean race. I'm just happy to have another national championship under my belt. I was definitely hurt when I hit the ground. You can sense something happening by the loudspeaker. It was really exciting. It took a lot of hard work to get here. It's exciting for us and our coach." Men's 800m Champion- Khadevis Robinson: "My coach wanted me to come through faster. I have so much confidence in myself now. It's the fastest time in the world and I can't complain about that. The time and talent is here in the U.S. We just need more races, more money and more support. I'm trying to balance training, traveling and sleeping." Women's 400mH Champion- Lashinda Demus: "I wanted to run 52.7. I think I could have done that is I didn't hit the last hurdle. This is my fastest time ever, so I am happy with that, but, I have more to do. I followed my game plan. I ran hard enough to get into the race mode, but I knew I could go faster." Men's 200m Champion- Wallace Spearmon: "It wasn't my best, but I'm happy with the results. I was just trying to worry about myself and come out on top. That was the beginning of what's to come for the rest of the year. This has been a bad meet for me in the past, so I'm happy. I was shooting for a bit faster, but the rounds took a bit out of me. The start was usual; I normally don't have a good one." Women's 400mH Champion- Lashinda Demus: "I wanted to run 52.7. I think I could have done that is I didn't hit the last hurdle. This is my fastest time ever, so I am happy with that, but, I have more to do. I followed my game plan. I ran hard enough to get into the race mode, but I knew I could go faster." Women's 200m Champion- Rachelle Boone-Smith: "It's great to be back in Indiana. This is home away from home. We want to perform well. I'm ecstatic about Athens World Cup." Men's 1500m Champion- Bernard Lagat: "I wanted to run a clear race. I wanted to be in front. I was conserving a bit, I wanted to keep going at a steady pace because I knew I could kick it. It is my first nationals and I am honored to be here. I got a really warm reception here. I feel a connection with the people, like you are a part of us. I think by doubling and winning both (1,500m and 5,000m), it is my way of giving back to them. " Men's Triple Jump Champion- Walter Davis: "I always try to get one early to put pressure on guys and get the final jump in the finals. They say that the triple jump is the step-son of the long jump. We're trying to make it the father." Men's High Jump Champion- Tora Harris: "This was a big one for me. My last jump was everything I had. I did what I needed and it was perfect." Men's 110mH Champion- Dominique Arnold: "I feel good. I kind of screwed up the race a little bit. I haven't run this fast all year. It screwed up my rhythm a bit, it's a fast track. We all work hard. Xiang Liu (2004 Olympic Gold Medalist) has proven he's a fast guy. Unlike sprinters, who dodge each other, we see each other all the time." Kevin Eastler, men's 20 km race walk: "It was seven and a half minutes slower than at the World Cup of Race Walking. It's just hard to put that kind of effort in again so quickly. I thought John [Nunn] or Tim [Seaman] would be with me, but I was alone pretty much from the start. It's been a long season and I'm ready to finish it off strong. I've got two weeks left, then I'll take some time off." Jared Swehosky, junior men's 10 km race walk: "The main thing for me today was to qualify to go to China, but I guess I have more practice and mileage to go to get that goal. I felt great. It was good until 10 laps, then I started feeling it - my calves started hurting." |
