World Championships marathon recap
The men's and women's U.S. teams continued to show improvement on the international scene turning in solid performances at this year's IAAF World Championships in Athletics, which once again doubled as the World Cup Marathon.
The men's race was won by Jaouad Gharib of Morocco in 2:10:10. Brian Sell led the U.S. men, running 2:13:27 for ninth-place, the first top-ten finish since Steve Plasencia's tenth-place in 1995. Sell's time was also just nine seconds off his personal best and was the fastest time ever run by an American at the World Championships marathon.
In the World Cup team standings, Japan successfully defended their team title with a combined time of 6:38:39 finishing ahead of Kenya (6:46:38), Ethiopia (6:52:14) and the U.S. (6:53:55).
"I thought finishing fourth as a team was real significant," said Clint Verran, the U.S.'s second finisher. Team-mate Peter Gilmore added, "It's a great showing for the U.S.A. Everyone had the guts to finish and was proud to put on the USA uniform. I think it's a small breakthrough for American distance running. I'm glad to be part of that."
Women's favorite Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain lived up to her top billing, running a championship record 2:20:57 to defeat defending champion Catherine Ndereba of Kenya (2:22:01). Turena Johnson Lane led U.S. finishers with a personal best 2:34:43 to finish 26th. Johnson Lane's time was the third fastest by a U.S. woman at the World Championships, behind 1983 Silver medalist Marianne Dickerson's 2:31:09 and the 2:32:12 seventh-place finish by Linda Somers Smith in 1995.
The women's World Cup team competition was won by Kenya with a combined time of 7:12:39, the U.S. women finished sixth in 7:49:44.
