Team USA's Jason Lehmkuhle finishes as top American at Bix 7

Jason Lehmkuhle finished as the top American at the Bix 7 in Davenport, IA on Saturday, placing ninth overall in 33:34.

The race was won by Kenya's Gilbert Okari in 32:24. Lehmkuhle finished ahead of Americans Ryan Shay and Kyle Baker, who finished 11th (34:03) and 14th (34:39) respectively.

Lehmkuhle, a member of Team USA Minnesota, recently was named to the U.S. marathon team for the Helsinki World Championships when Scott Larson withdrew from the team with a hamstring injury in July. The IAAF World Championships in Athletics will be held in Helsinki, Finland August 6-14.

"Since I haven't raced in a while, and I'm mired in a marathon buildup. I was unsure about how sharp I'd be," said Lehmkuhle, a former Drake University All-American. "I thought that if I snuck into the top ten it would be a good race for me. All in all, I thought it was a good effort and it served as a great final tune up before Helsinki."

Casey Owens, an All-American from Southwest Missouri State ran 40:07 to finish ninth in the women's race, which was won by Romania's Nuta Olaru in 36:53.

USATF Elite Development Club link of the week - Club Northwest

Club Northwest was founded in 1972 from a number of smaller running clubs in the Seattle area, and began competing in the spring of 1973. CNW sent its first team to the cross country nationals in the fall of 1974, and has been represented every year since then by at least one individual. Don Kardong was the Club's first Olympian, finishing fourth in the marathon in Montreal '76.

Club Northwest continues to be heavily involved in the Pacific Northwest running community, and nationally with USA Track & Field. Kardong, a former CNW president, was USATF men's long distance running chair for six years in the 1990's. Former president Dr. Dean Ingram was USATF's first national secretary, a post later occupied by current USATF president and Club founder Bill Roe. Life member Kenny Emerick recently retired after nearly 20 years as PNTF youth chair. Many other members have been active on both the local and national scene.
