INDIANAPOLIS - Wallace Spearmon Jr., has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting a world-leading time in the men's 200 meters last Friday in London.

Spearmon won the race in a personal-best 19.89 seconds at the Norwich Union Grand Prix, giving him three of the four fastest times in the world this season. In London, Spearmon defeated, among others, world junior record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica. This marks the second time this year that Spearmon has been named USATF's Athlete of Week.

The American record holder indoors (20.01), Spearmon won the 2005 NCAA indoor and outdoor crowns and was fourth at the USA Outdoor Championships. He will compete in the 200 at the World Outdoor Championships August 6-14 in Helsinki, Finland.

An impressive performance was turned in last week by J-Mee Samuels, who won the Young Men's 100 meters in 10.08 seconds Sunday at the Blunt Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. Upon ratification Samuels' mark would be a national high school record. A graduate of Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, N.C., Samuels has signed with the University of Arkansas.

Also last week 2005 USA Outdoor Championships runner-up and reigning U.S. indoor 400m champion Bershawn Jackson continued to look impressive this year in posting two wins in the the 400m hurdles. On Friday he won in London in 47.98 before winning again at the DN Galan IAAF Super Grand Prix in Stockholm, Sweden in 48.07 seconds.

Now in its fifth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
