INDIANAPOLIS - Meb Keflezighi has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after posting the best finish by an American in 11 years Sunday at the 2004 ING New York City Marathon.
The American record holder at 10,000 meters and 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the marathon, Keflezighi finished second in New York in a personal-best time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 53 seconds. A Mammoth Lakes, Calif., resident, Keflezighi's run marked the highest finish for an American in New York since Bob Kempainen placed second in 1993.
Now in its fourth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
