BOSTON – Some of the world’s finest athletes at any age kept up a frenetic record pace with another flurry of world and American records Sunday at the 2004 USA Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Including 30 records set on Sunday, 26 world and 42 American records were set during the 3-day meet at the Reggie Lewis Center as more than 800 athletes from around the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean competed.

All records are pending ratification.

The women’s 3,000-meter race walk on Sunday saw the youngest and oldest individual female record breakers of the meet. Former open U.S. national champion Maryanne Torrellas blasted a time of 14:37.86 to set a world and American record in the 45-49 age group, while Fan Benno-Caris finished in 27:11.02 for a world and American record in the 85-89 age group.

The men’s walk also yielded records, with world and American records set by Jack Starr of Newark, Del., in the men’s 75-59 (17:52.74) and Donald Denoon of Claremont, Fla., in the men’s 60-64 (14:22.23). Charles Boyle of Annapolis added an AR in the 80-84 (21:04.36).

90-year-old Max Springer added two more world records and three American records on Sunday, finishing the meet with four world records and six American records. On Sunday, the Knoxville, Tenn., resident turned in world and American records in the M90-94 800 meters (5:01.44) and triple jump (5.09m/16-8.50). He added an AR in the 200m (49.32).

Roderick Parker of Amity, Alaska, set his second world record of the meet in the men’s 85-89 200 meters with his outrageously fast time of 35.74 –one of the top performances of the meet. One of the meet’s top performers, Earl Fee of Mississauga, Ontario, ran his third world record of the meet with a time of 2:32.47 in the men’s 75-79 800 meters. The 800m brought plenty of fireworks, with Sidney Howard of Plainfield, N.J. running 2:23.79 for a men’s 65-69 American record, and Suzi McLeod of Bend, Ore., added a world record in the women’s 70-74 (3:20.14).

Three American records fell in the super weight throw as Tom Gage of Billings, Mt., threw 9.06m/29-8.75 in M60-64; Bob Ward of Dallas threw 10.30m/33-9.50 in M70-74; and Leland McPhie posted his third AR of the meet with 2.70m/8-10.25 in M90-95.

The women’s relays were hot as the meet’s last event. Eastern Regional set a world and American record in the women’s 50-59 with their time of 4:43.27; the club’s 30-39 relay added an AR with 4:17.30. Two teams of American athletes also broke world and American records in the 60-69 age group (5:16.99) and 40-49 age group (4:50.38). Relay lineups were unavailable.
