INDIANAPOLIS - Joe Parker of the Silver State Striders and Amber Harper of the Sojourner's Track Club earned Verizon Athlete of the Meet honors at the USATF National Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The event is the final stop in the 2003 Verizon Youth Series, which includes the Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships, Youth Athletics Championships, and USA Junior Track & Field championships.
Parker, a sophomore at Reno (NV) High School, won the intermediate boys' division in impressive fashion, traversing the undulating 5 km course in 16:51, while Harper, a BYU freshman, won the young women's 5 km race in 18:47.
Parker was fourth in the Nevada state high school 4A championships last month. Harper was 83rd at the NCAA cross country championships in November, and was named Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year.
The event, which was held at the Lovelace Soccer Complex on the outskirts of Albuquerque, featured more than 2,600 age group runners from around the nation. A full meet recap will be posted at www.usatf.org when official results from all age groups are confirmed.
