INDIANAPOLIS – Kevin Toth has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after smashing his own men’s shot put meet record while posting a world-leading mark Saturday (April 19) at the 76th Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kansas.

Toth’s throw of 22.67 meters/74 feet, 4.50 inches bettered his previous career best of 22.19m/72-9.75, which he threw in winning the 2002 Nike Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore. His performance at Kansas is the best in the world since Randy Barnes threw 23.10m/75-9.50 in 1990. Toth’s previous Kansas Relays record of 21.70m/71-2.50 was set in 1997.

Yet another impressive performance was turned in by prep star Allyson Felix, who broke Marion Jones’ U.S. Junior and national high school record in the women’s 200 meters Saturday at the 45th Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California. The Los Angeles Baptist High School senior won the race in 22.51 seconds, bettering the previous record of 22.58, set by Jones in 1992. Felix’s performance at Mt. SAC would’ve won her the silver medal at the 2001 World Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

World-leading performances by American athletes set Saturday at Mt. SAC include Kelli White’s 10.97 in the women’s 100m; Jess Strutzel’s 4:02.80 performance in the men’s mile; Kenta Bell’s leap of 17.31m/56-9.5 in the men’s triple jump; Kassi Andersen’s 10:05.73 in the women’s 3000m steeplechase; and Tracy O'Hara and Becky Holliday’s clearances of 4.40m/14-5.25 in the women’s pole vault.

Now in its third year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF Web site. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
