TIM RUSAN: winner, men’s triple jump On his winning jump: My third phase felt really good and I could feel my feet under me like there supposed to be. You can always feel when it’s going to be a good jump or a bad one, and this was a very good one. I knew I had a jump like this in me and I picked the right time for it to happen. Finally it all came together for me. This is a big boost for my career. I’ve been looking for some recognition and this is the way to get it. I want to keep making world championships teams and I want to be an Olympian.

WALTER DAVIS: runner-up, men’s triple jump I was jumping in Europe a couple weeks ago and I’ve really been looking forward to this competition. I felt like I’ve been getting better in practice lately and I got some good rest the last couple days. At the 2000 Olympic Trials Mike Powell (men’s world long jump record holder) was talking about what’s happened to the U.S. jumpers? Our U.S. men’s long jumpers are now the best in the world again, and hopefully Tim and I will lead the same type of rise with American triple jumping. The competition was great today. I really thrive on this type of competition.

JOANNE DOW: winner, women’s race walk I’ve been having some tendonitis in my hamstring lately, so I came into today’s competition just looking to enjoy the race. Michelle (Rohl) grabbed the lead, but I could hear her breathing heavy late in the race, so I decided to pass her with four laps to go. I gave it my best the rest of the way and it all worked out.

MONIQUE HENNAGAN – 1st place, - Women’s 400 meters I really felt good right from the start. My practices have been going very well. I knew I was in position to run faster. But because I was out in front all alone I might have slowed a little.

I knew coming into the race I had good sharpness. I wasn’t surprised that I was in front right from the break line. This was a good race and I’m pleased with the way I ran. I know I’m in shape to run faster.

MEGAN ADDY – 2nd place – Women’s 400 meters I felt really good out there. I’m more of a strength runner and this track doesn’t allow me to run the type of race I usually run, so I was happy just to stick with the pack and see what would happen down the homestretch.

The 400 meters isn’t really my event (I’m more of a 400 meter hurdles runner), and that was the team I was hoping to make for the [outdoor] World Championships this summer.

Making the Indoor World Championship team was a complete surprise, given that I’ve only been training with my current coach at the [Calif.] US Training Center for less than one month. At the start of this indoor season, I thought I would be training through it. Now I’m off to Birmingham.

COREY NELSON – 2nd Men’s 400 meters I got out a bit slow in lane six. Once that happened I had to tell myself to just relax and hang in there to the final turn. I felt good the entire race. I just told myself not to worry about lane six. I concentrated on everyone on the inside of me. I was pleased with my finish kick.

TYREE WASHINGTON – 1st Men’s 400 meters It feels good to win, I’m not really an indoor runner, and I’m an outdoor runner so this is awesome. It’s different for me.

That’s when you need to do it, to win – when it really counts. It’s been tough, I took almost two years off because of my injury and some personal issues. It hasn’t been an easy time.

It’s the first time since 1998 that I’ve been on the World Championship team and it feels good to be back.

If it wasn’t for my church and my wife, I probably wouldn’t have come back. I had to testify against my sister in her first-degree murder trial, and it’s been hard.

I’m getting my BA in Psychology.

JASON LUNN – 1st, 1500 Meters I was really pleased with the way the race went. In the beginning I was a bit surprised there wasn’t more runners up closer to us. Coming into the race Mike (Stember) and I felt we could go 1-2.

I know I’m in shape to challenge the American Record in the 1500. But in this type of championship race it’s not the place to do it. It is more important to get the win.

MICHAEL STEMBER – 2nd place, 1500 meters I knew going into the race it was going to be Lunn and me. We wanted to distance the field, and I – personally – was on a mission to be either first or second. When we got into town, we heard some rumblings which we didn’t think was right [about Alan Webb and the world championships if no one got the standard]. I was really disappointed about that and fired me up. I was feeling really good with 600 to go, but decided to wait.

ALAN WEBB – 7th place, 1500 Meters I got boxed in on the last lap and had nowhere to go. I wasn’t in position to make a good move at the end. I felt real good, but there was nowhere to run. I’m really disappointed. This is just a part of my education. I’d like to have done better in the indoor season. Now it’s time to get ready for outdoors.

GAIL DEVERS – winner, women’s 60m hurdles The American record feels good. I felt like I could have gone faster and that there was some room for improvement. The final didn’t feel as good as the semi round, it wasn’t the best race for me technically. It felt a little shaky.

This is my first national title in the hurdles, and that is a feat for me. I wanted the first round to be my best round.

My prayer coming into this was that God would allow me to break the American record in the hurdles, and do it on U.S. turf.

ALLEN JOHNSON – 1st, men’s 60m hurdles This was as good as I could have expected this time of the year. I’ve probably put a bit more emphasis on this indoor season than the past several years.

I really want another indoor and out world championship title. For me, It’s probably a bit harder for me to win the indoor title. Simple because sometimes I get a bit lazy over the indoor hurdles, in my own mind.

Training is going very well and I’m pleased with the technical aspects of today’s race.

REGINA JACOBS – winner, women’s 1500 meters The whole idea of my approach coming into this meet is to simulate the rounds of the world championships. What its going to be like at worlds was our approach to the events I selected and how I’m running this weekend. Today was just a run; tomorrow I’ll go for a record (doubling back).

I haven’t raced in three weeks, and so I definitely felt like I needed the work. But my abductor [injury] is fine, but at this age, it’s all about injury management. When you train this hard at this level, you’re bound to come down with aches and pains, but its part of the game. See you guys tomorrow…gotta go, tomorrow I’m going for the record.

DEREK MILES: winner, men’s pole vault I had to take a lot of attempts earlier in the competition than I wanted to. I was really hoping to jump better than 19 feet, but with all those earlier jumps I just ran out of gas. There’s a lot of great young competitors in the pole vault in the U.S., and this competition proved that. Although I didn’t jump real high, I’m happy to win the U.S. title.

JEREMY SCOTT: runner-up, men’s pole vault (a senior at NCAA Div. III Allegheny College) Coming here and competing against so many great vaulters is a tremendous thrill. Derek Miles, Tim Mack, Tye Harvey and the others are all terrific. I’ve been practicing really well and I just keep on improving. It’s very exciting. I’ glad to be jumping so well now because in the spring time the weather is usually terrible in Pennsylvania, so I don’t know how well I’ll jump in the spring. I have Division III Nationals coming up in a couple weeks, but I’m still hoping on competing at the World Championships. I’m pretty sure I will.

CHRYSTE GAINES: runner-up, women’s 60 meter dash I think it was a good race. I felt strong and think my time was good. Angela (Williams) was just a better sprinter today. I’m happy with my time – it was my best time of the season.

JUSTIN GATLIN –1st, men’s 60 meters This was a good overall race for me. I got out very good at the start and was able to ease into the transition phase of the race. I stayed focus the entire way and didn’t let up.

This was important to me to come away running the fastest time in the world this year. I wanted to make sure I was mentally prepared going into the worlds. I’m looking forward to the world championships and this race is just what I needed.

ANGELLA WILLIAMS, 1st, women’s 60m I was very nervous at the start. My legs were shaking and I was twitching all over. Once I got out of the blocks I felt much better. I seemed to be able to ease into the transition phase of the race. I just kept pumping my arms and focusing on the finish.

I know sometimes they (the other runners) think I’m not as strong as I need to be in the later stages of my race. Today I was able to keep my concentration right to the finish.

TERRENCE TRAMMELL – 2nd place in both the 60 hurdles and 60 dash After six races today, I’m just happy that I made the [wc] team in both. Six races in such close proximity was very tiring, and this is probably the first time that I’ve run six races since I was in high school. As far as the hurdles, I could have been sharper but I’ll go back to the videotape and analyze it over and over again to see where and how I can improve. I’m probably a lot harder on myself when I watch the video that I am on my competitors.

As for Allen [Johnson], you have to take your hat off to the guy. I was on one-hundredth off my PR and he still beat me.

Going through the day, I knew that I had six races, but – you know it’s a cliché – but I was just taking it one race at a time. But, man, am I fatigued now. I’m feeling it! But, I’ll definitely run both (hurdles and flat 60m) at the world championships.

SARAH SCHWALD – 2nd, women’s 1500m My goal here was to simply make the team for the world championships. I felt very comfortable the entire way. At first I thought I might go to challenge Regina. Then with the pace being a bit slow I just decided to play it safe and make sure I took second.

I was running wide because on a slow pace like this I didn’t want to get caught boxed inside when the final straight came. This leaves me in a good frame of mind for the world championships.

YULIANA PEREZ – 3rd, women’s triple jump I usually don’t get off to a good start, but when I do, I can control my jumps. I was at a disadvantage because I do not weightlift like my other competitors. Things will be different next year with my training and I will make it happen (to win USA TJ Indoors).
