Competition heats up at USA Masters Championships

ORONO, Maine – The 2002 USA Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships ended Sunday under sunny skies and temperatures near 90 degrees. The action took place at the University of Maine’s Clarence Beckett Family Track & Field Center in Orono.

Individual performances at the USA Championships are conducted in five-year age groups. Relay titles are conducted in ten-year age groups.

The day began early this morning with 10,000m race walks on the roads, where Jean Tenan won the W35 division in 59:37. Other women’s race walk winners included Marcia Gutsche (W40-54:55), Debbie Topham (W45-1:01:17), Sherry Brosnahan of Shore AC (57:30), Jolene Steigerwalt of the Southern California Walkers (W55-1:05:11), Elton Richardson (W60-1:04:02), Bev LaVeck (W65-1:02:18). Walkers competing unopposed were Claire Elkins (W70-1:26:21) and Jane Dana (W80-1:17:07).

Men’s race walk winners today were Dave McGovern of New Balance competing unchallenged (M35-49:51), Rod Craig of the Pegasus Athletic Club (51:31), Bill Reed of the Pegasus AC (55:56), Bohdan Bulakowski (M50-52:47), Leon Jasionowski of the Pegasus AC (M55-52:47), Paul Johnson of the Florida AC (57:51), Jack Bray of Marin Race Walkers (58:05), Alfred DuBois of Parkside AC (M70-1:02:53), Edward Gawinski competed unopposed (M75-1:14:22), Paul Geyer (M80-1:21:0) and Paul Geyer competed unchallenged (M85-1:33:18).

Men’s 1,500 meter winners today included David Small of The Running Company (M30-4:30.99), Robert Van Cleve (M35-4:14.01), Tony Young of Club Northwest (M40-3:59.34), Steve Gallegos (M45-4:11.43), David Salazar (M50-4:24.21), Harold Nolan of Shore AC (4:41.20), Sidney Howard of the Central Track Club (M60-5:00.68), Henry Hawk (M65-5:05.05), James Sutton (M70-5:42.85), Harold Johnson of the Atlanta Track Club (M75-6:58.97), 2001 champion Bill Tribou (M80-7:13.17) and 2001 second place finisher Maxwell Springer of the Knoxville TC (9:31.87).

Devon Sargent of the Central Park Track Club successfully defended her 2001 W30 1,500m title by running unopposed in 4:58.61. Other women’s winners included Rebecca Heuer of the Checkers AC (W35-4:41.75), Kellie Eyre (W40-4:47), the runner-up at last year’s W50 competition Joni Shirley of the Southern California TC (W55-5:25.80), Mary-Louise Michelsohn (W60-5:32.82), Jean Horne (W65-6:31.02), Nancy Smalley of the Boulder Road Runners (W75-8:14.22) and Gerry Davidson of the San Diego TC (W80-8:47.34).

Emil Pawlik of the Dallas Masters won the M60 300m hurdles title this afternoon in 49.05 seconds. Other 300m hurdles winners were last year’s M60 runner-up Richard Rizzo of Sprint Force America (M65-50.60), and defending M70 champion Earl Fe of the Etobicoke Huskies, who ran unopposed in 51.17.

Men’s 400m hurdles winners were defending champion Don Drummond of the Atlanta TC (M30-54.92), 2001 runner-up Kerry Sloan (M35-57.82), Jeff Bower (M40-1:00.75), 2001 champion Michael Pannell (M45-1:01.54), James Dolezel of Team Oklahoma (M50-1:05.46) and Warren Graff of Sprint Force America (M55-1:08.07).

2001 W40 400m hurdles champion Joy Upshaw-Margeum defended her title today in 1:05.53.

Masters Hall of Famer Phil Raschker had another jaw-dropping day of competition, winning the 300m hurdles W55 age group title in the world record time of 49.14, bettering the previous standard of 52.11 by Corrie Remers in 1991. Raschker also won the W55 200m crown this afternoon in the world age group record time of 27.39, bettering the previous record of 27.90 by Canadian Avril Douglas in 2001. If that wasn’t enough, Raschker also captured her ninth national title at these championships with an American W55 record triple jump of 9.66m/31-8.50, bettering the previous standard of 8.08m/26-6.25 by Christel Miller in 1990. At this year’s Championships, the amazing Raschker set five world records and one American record.

Other women’s 300m hurdles winners this afternoon included Rhona Trott (W50-56:07), and in the in the W65 division, 2001 champion Barbara Jordan defended her title in 1:00.53.

Men’s 200m winners were Marek Wensel (M30-22.84); 2001 champion Kettrell Berry of the Southern California TC (M35-22.28), Allan Tissenbaum of Sprint Force America (M40-22.60), Ben James (M45-23.36), Edward Gonera of Sprint Force America (M50-23.37), Peter Crombie (M55-24.90), Paul Edens (M60-25.90), Larry Colbert of Sprint Force America (M65-26.95), Harry Brown of the Midwest T&F Club (M70-28.24), Bill Melville (M75-29.58), Jim Manno (M80-34.16) and Bill Weinacht (M85-38.08).

Women’s 200m winners were Lillian Awidi of the New Horizon TC (W30-27.46), Maureen Rodrigue (W35-27.07), 2001 runner-up Joy Upshaw-Margeum (W40-26.66), Denise McField (W45-26.98), Anna Wlodarczyk (W50-28.64), Lynne Ingalls (W60-31.43), Jeanne Daprano of the Atlanta TC (W65-32.71), Patricia Peterson of the Syracuse Chargers (W75-39.96) and Olga Kotelko (W80-48.52).

Men’s 4x100m relay winning teams were Southern California TC (M50-44.71), Metropolitan (M40-48.23) and Dallas Masters (M30-50.97).

In men’s 4x400m relay action, Fibo Track Club was victorious at M60 in 3:29.35. Other winners were Maryland Masters (M50-3:36.82), Sprint Force America ran unopposed in 3:37.20, Eastern Regional ran unchallenged (M30-5:14.45) and Southeast Region Association ran unopposed (M20-5:34.12).

Men’s 4x800m relay winners were Unattached (8:52.17), Mid-American Regional Association (M45-10:04.38) and Eastern Regional (M35-10:21.53).

Women’s relay winners were Southern California TC (W40-4:33.56), and in the 4x800m relay, Unattached ran unopposed in12:14.73.

The hammer throw area was busy this afternoon with champions determined in all age groups. Men’s winners were Phillip Brusca of the Midwest Masters T&F Club (M75-30.44m/99 feet, 10 inches), 2001 champion Robert Chase of the Twilight Throwers (M80-30.45m/99-11), Wendell Palmer (M70-40.60m/133-2), Carl Wallin of the Boston Athletics Association (M60-46.26m/151-9), 2001 champion Bob Ward (M65-45.06m/147-10), Thomas Meyer (M50-45.61m/149-8) and 12th place finisher at the 1972 Olympic Games, defending champion and U.S. masters age group record holder Tom Gage (M55-57.14m/187-6). Other men’s hammer winners were Michael Verning (M40-46.21m/151-7), James Wetenhall (M45-51.02m/167-5), Tim Fua (M30-48.98m/160-8) and Troy Herr (M35-56.82m/186-5).

Women’s hammer throw winners were Kristen Dajja (W35-40.90m/134-2), Oeitha Lewis of the New York Masters Sports Club (W40-52.83m/173-4), Carol Finsrud of Lockhart International TC (W45-41.31m/135-6), Mary Hartzler of Team Ohio (W50-33.99m/111-6), Georgia Cutler (W55-34.53m/113-3), Evaun Williams (W60-42.50m/139-5), Evelyn Wright of the Potomac Valley TC (W65-27.40m/89-11), Judy Featherston competed unopposed (W70-23.45m/76-11) and Bernice Holland won the W75 division with a best of 20.66m/67-9).

In triple jump action on Sunday, women’s winners were Kimiko Nakatake (W30-9.49m/31-1.75), 2001 champion Veronica Amarasekara of the Southern California Track Club (W40-10.58m/34-8.50), Irene Thompson (W45-8.94m/29-4), Anna Wlodarczyk (W50-10.88m/35-8.50).

Other women’s triple jump winners included Ann Carter of the Atlanta Track Club (W60-6.43m/21-1.25) and Audrey Lary of the Potomac Valley TC, who bettered her own W65 American record (8.25m/27-0.75 ’99) with a leap of 8.53m/28-0. Johnnye Valien of the Southern California TC won the W75 group with a best of 4.93m/16-2.25, and Margaret Hinton competed unchallenged (W80-4.60m/15-1.25).

Men’s triple jump winners today were 2001 runner-up Robert Baker (M55-10.28m/33-8.75), Buster Byrnes (M60-9.07m/29-9.25), 2001 runner-up Tom Langenfeld (9.24m/30-3.75), 2001 champion James Stookey of the Potomac Valley TC (M70-8.02m/26-3.75), Bill Carter of the Dallas Masters (M75-7.31m/23-11.75), Edwin Lukens of the Syracuse Chargers (M80-8.27m/27-1.75), Leland McPhie (M85-5.17m/16-11.50), Larry Rodenbeck (M50-11.81m/38-9), Rod Weston (M30-14.00m/45-11.25), Gregory Foster of Shore AC (M40-14.46m/47-5.25) and Mike Lariza (M45-13.70m/44-11.50).
