Trammell leads U.S. gold rush at NACAC FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Olympic silver medalist Terrence Trammell left a lasting impression on the hurdles of San Antonio Saturday as he crashed his way to a win in 13.45 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles to lead another spectacular U.S. performance on day two of the NACAC Track & Field Championships. Team USA won 11 golds at Trinity University's Stevens Stadium, raising its two day total to 19.
Trammell left only three of the ten barriers standing as he held off a fast-closing Ron Bramlett of the U.S. for the win. Bramlett, the NCAA indoor and outdoor hurdles champ for Alabama, finished in 13.53.
Brianna Glenn was a double women's winner for the host nation, picking up gold in the long jump and on the 4x100 relay. Glenn ran the opening leg on the relay, helping the team set a meet record of 44.10. She was joined on the relay by Danielle Carruthers, Nakeya Crutchfield and 100m gold medalist Amandi Rhett. Glenn leaped 6.22/20-5 to capture the long jump gold.
Sprint medalists Jason Smoots and Tom Green teamed up with Tyson Gay and Derrick Johnson to help the U.S. men to a 39.79-39.81 win over the Bahamas in the men's 4x100, with Johnson holding off Domonic Demeritte for the gold.
Jordan Desilets and Mollie DeFrancesco engineered a sweep of the 3000m steeplechase golds, with DeFrancesco establishing a meet record with her 10:53.47 clocking. Desilets romped to gold in the men's race, winning by more than seven seconds in 8:52.10.
Gold was the order of the day in the women's 800, where Chantee Earl set a meet record at 2:03.17 to best teammate Sasha Spencer's 2:04.47.
On the field the U.S. swept the hammer medals and picked up gold and silver in the men's shot put. Jamine Moton, the collegiate record holder for Clemson, won the women's hammer with a meet record 65.10/213-7. Amber Campbell also topped the old meet record in winning the silver at 62.71/205-9. In the men's hammer, Thomas Freeman won with a toss of 66.49/218-2. Carey Ryan won the silver for Team USA at 61.58/202-0.
Monmouth's Jon Kalnas won the men's shot with a toss of 18.70/61-4.25, ahead of teammate Chris Adams, who won silver with a 17.70/58-1 effort.
Georgia decathlete David Lemen won his specialty by 312 points, setting a meet record with 7239. Lemen regained the lead after the pole vault, where he cleared 16-8.75, and he went on to throw 186-2 in the javelin and run 4:59.57 for 1500 meters to seal the win.
The most exciting finish of the day came in the men's 10,000 meters, where Mexico's Jonathan Morales outleaned Brian Sell of the U.S. to win by .03 seconds in 30:16.26, a meet record. The pair had traded the lead throughout the race and covered the final 400 in 62 seconds.
Other medalists Saturday included race walker Steve Quirke, who was second in the 20-kilometer event at 1:44:20, and Carruthers, who was second in the women's 100 hurdles with a 13.00 clocking. Texas A&M product Christina Ohaeri was third behind Carruthers at 13.52.
North Carolina Elite's Crystal Cox continued her return to top form with the fastest qualifying time in the women's 200 at 23.17, a meet record. Cox lowered her 400 personal best to 51.65 on Friday to capture silver.
Team USA athletes hold the top two positions in the women's heptathlon after day one, with Gigi Miller leading with 3411 points and Lindsay Taylor second at 3214. Taylor's twin sister, Brenda, was second in the 400 hurdles on Friday.
