Multi-event athletes were in the limelight Wednesday on day two of the USA Track & Field Junior Olympic National Championships competition in Omaha, Neb., with two national records being set in the youngest age groups.

Jacquelyn Johnson of Yuma, Ariz. won the young women’s heptathlon, finishing the two-day event with a total of 5,260 points. Johnson barely missed her personal record of 5,286, which ranks as the sixth best high school performance in U.S. history.

“My goal was to break the (Junior Olympic meet) record, and I was less than 100 points from it,” Johnson said. “I PR’d in the shot, 200 and 800. If I would have thrown close to 105 feet in the javelin I probably would have broken (the record).”

The battle for the gold came down to the final event of the young men’s decathlon, where Jordan Mumford of Texas Express used strong showings in the pole vault and 1500 to overtake Justin Palmer of Tremonton, Utah. Mumford clocked 4:43.57 in the 1500 to take the gold with 6,675 points. Palmer, who ran the 1500 in 5:09.74, finished at 6,549.

Kiani Profit of Pasadena, Calif. defended her midget girls pentathlon title and raised her meet record from 3,111 to 3,121. Rashad Rainey-Cox of Riverside, Calif. scored 1,032 points to break the bantam boys triathlon record with his 400m of 1:04.86, shot put of 7.61m/24-11.75 and high jump of 1.55m/5-1.

In other action on the track, defending champions Erica Adams of Spartanburg, S.C. and Zachary Pollinger of New Jersey Striders defended their titles in the intermediate girls’ and boys’ 5,000m race walks.
