EDMONTON – American middle distance star Regina Jacobs on Monday returned home to Oakland, Calif., suffering from a serious foot injury. The 2001 U.S. 800m and 1,500m champion will not compete in the 800m at the World Track & Field Championships.

On Saturday, Jacobs dropped out of her heat of the women’s 1,500m with 150 meters to go after she felt a sharp pain her right foot roughly halfway through the race. Jacobs is currently on crutches and will visit her sports medicine podiatrist on Tuesday for a final diagnosis of her injury. She believes it to be a plantar fascia injury.

“I think I have got my first major injury that I can’t race through,” Jacobs said. “Obviously it’s more than disappointing. I had some great workouts coming into this championship and fully thought I would medal. I just could not push off my foot.

Jacobs is a two-time World Championships silver medalist at 1,500m and a 10-time U.S. 1,500m champion. She also is a three-time 5,000m champion in addition to her 800m title, which she won in June at the GMC Envoy USA Outdoor Championships. She holds the American record at 1,000m and 5,000m.
