Dunn wins National 50K RaceWalking Championship
Philip Dunn upset three-time national champion Curt Clausen at the National 50K RaceWalking Championships in Manassas, Va., this past weekend with a time of 3:57:33
Dunn’s winning time qualified him for both the 2001 World Track and Field Championships in Edmonton and the 2001 Pan Am Cup in Ecuador. It was only Dunn’s second race under four hours in the 50K.
Clausen, who struggled with intestinal problems during the race before finishing second, was bidding to become only the third walker to win four championships in a row. Clausen had already secured a spot at the World Championships in Edmonton with his sub-4 hour finish at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. He was 4th at the 1999 World Championships.
In only his second career 50K, Tim Seaman finished third with a time of 4:14:27. Al Heppner (4:22:18) a member of the Army’s World Class Athlete Training Program and Theron Kissinger (4:23:39) rounded out the top five.
Susan Armenta claimed the first-ever women’s 50K national title while establishing a national record time of 4:49:42. Armenta was challenged early on by France’s Kora Boufflert, who finished second in a time of 5:07:02. Americans Sherry Brosnahan (5:19:34), Monetta Roberts (5:56:32) and Jeanne Dorton (6:15:23) rounded out the top five.
