2011 Coaching Enhancement Grants

USATF is pleased to offer the following grants for the 2011 year to assist coaches in opportunities to enhance their professional growth.  An application within the stated timeline is required of interested candidates. Please send completed applications to Terry Crawford, Director of Coaching, terry.crawford@usatf.org. All applications will be forwarded to the grants sub-committee of the Coaches Advisory Committee. Selection and notification to recipients will be made within 10 days of the event’s application deadline.

1. USATF Senior Combined Event Mentorship at the USATF Outdoor National Championships in Eugene, Oregon from June 23-26. This new mentorship program will provide an up close and personal experience of the strategies, meet prep, mental preparation and ”in the moment” coaching for an elite coach and their combined events athlete at the world class level. The grant recipient will shadow one of the USATF elite combined event coaches for the decathlon and heptathlon at the National Championships. Each day’s competition will be followed with an hour rap session with the mentor coach.

Grant: Four (4) $800 grants are available towards travel and room and board costs. Coaching Credential to be included.  Recipient must arrange personal travel and housing and must attend all sessions of the senior combined events.

Application Deadline: May 25, 2011

Criteria:

1. A coach cannot have an athlete competing in the Championships.
2. A current coach who is either a head high school coach for 5 years or a college assistant or head coach for minimum of 5 years.
3. Has coached an athlete at the Junior or Senior US Outdoor Championships in the last five years or coached a high school athlete at the state championships.
4. Preferred but not required, Level 2 Coaching Education certificate in any of the event disciplines.

6. Two paragraph position statement on attending the mentorship, submitted with application.

2. NACACTFCA Congress in Merida, Mexico from Oct. 6-9, 2011. World Class Coaches will lecture at the Congress, including Cuban Hurdle Coach, Santiago Antunez (coach of Dayron Robles), Raul Barreda (Mexican 400m Coach of Ana Guevara), David Johnston (US coach well known for innovation and stride development in sprints), Peter Pratt (Bahamian TJ coach) and Carlos Cavalheiro (highly successful Brazilian Distance Coach).  More information and a list of speakers is available at http://nacactfca.org.

Grants:  Four (4) $1000 grants are available to cover expenses.

1. Member of the USATF Coaches Registry
2. Level 2 Coaching Certificate required
3. Current high school , college, or professional elite coach
4. Application that includes a half page philosophical statement on career goals

3. USOC International Altitude Training Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colo., Wednesday, October 5 - Friday, October 7, 2011. The Symposium brings some of the foremost sport scientists and coaches together to present topics on the practical application of altitude training for enhancement of athletic performance. Grants:  Four (4) $800 grants to be awarded to cover travel expenses and symposium fee ($200)

2. Level 2 Coaching Education Certificate
3. Current high school, college, or professional elite coach
4. Application to include a brief statement of how you can use the information

4. Podium Education Project, November 30, 2011 in St. Louis, Missouri.  The program will be held in conjunction with the USATF Annual Meeting, December 1-3, 2011. USATF’s high performance symposium will offer cutting edge research and training methods to impact the athletic performance for aspiring world class athletes.   Detailed information and topics can be found in the special programs section of Coaches Education at www.usatf.org. Grants:  Ten (10) $500 grants towards travel expenses

Application Deadline: September 1, 2011

Criteria:

1. Member of the USATF Coaches Registry
2. Level  2 Coaching Education certificate
3. Current Coach at high school or college, professional level
4. Application that includes a half page philosophical statement on career goal

5. Emerging Elite Coaches Camp, June 27-July 2, 2011 at the Olympic Training Camp in Chula Vista, Calif. Detailed information on the camp can be found on the special programs page under Coaches Education at www.usatf.org, or by contacting, Mike Holman, mhtrackfield1@yahoo.com. Camp mission:  To provide a “learn by doing” experience for emerging elite coaches in the areas of sport science, psychology, and technical training in jumps, throws, or sprints/hurdles. Limited space is available, so early application is recommended. Camp Director, Mike Holman will review all applicants.

Grants: Ten (10) grants for $325 to cover room and board costs at training center
