Instructors

• Apryl Hampton has been involved with USATF as a member of the US Pan Am Junior staff, US World Championship Tune up staff and the USATF Southwestern Association. She has also participated as a member of the USATF Women's Development Committee (Horizontal Jumps) and as an instructor at the National Podium Education Project. Apryl is a USATF Level 1 & 2 Coach and instructor.
• Sue Humphrey was the 2004 Head Women's Olympic Coach and the only female to receive the Nike Coach of the Year Award. She has had several years of experience coaching elite and collegiate athletes; including Charles Austin, the 1996 Olympic Gold medalist in the high jump. She is the only female coach to have NCAA champions in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Sue currently serves as the national women's track and field chair for USATF and teaches English at Fulmore Middle School in Austin, Texas.
• Richie Mercado is the St. John’s High School (Houston, TX) Head Track & Field Coach. Richie competed as a decathlete at University of Virginia.  He has coached 28 years at St. John's School and is the Head Coach for girls and boys.  During that time he has coached dozens of conference champions in the pole vault, high jump, long jump, triple jump, sprints, and hurdles.  He is USATF level 2 Coach in the jumps and combined events and is the Jr. Coordinator for USA Heptathlon.  Mercado was the Head Coach for Team USA Heptathlon in the 2008 Thorpe Cup USA-Germany dual.  He has served several times as an instructor in USATF Women's Jr. Elite jump camps, working with many top juniors, including Tianna Madison, 2005 World Champ in the LJ.  He is currently the USATF Combined Events Instructor for the Emerging Elite Coaching Clinics at the USOC Training Center in Chula Vista, has directed the St. John’s Track & Field Camps for the past 17 years, and has served as secretary and annual congress coordinator of the North America, Central America, and Caribbean T&F Coaches Association for the last 20 years.
