Get on the fast track with the Verizon Youth Progress Award

The Verizon Youth Progress Award application deadline has been extended until Monday, March 1, 2004 at 12:00 a.m.

Verizon has partnered with USA Track & Field (USATF) to help student athletes get a good start with the Verizon Youth Progress Award program. Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements including:

  • Be a high school senior graduating in Spring 2004
  • Have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher (4.0 scale)
  • Have participated as an athlete in a Verizon Youth Series track & field and/or cross country event within the past 24 months
  • Reside or attend school in an area served by Verizon Communications or Verizon Wireless
  • Plan to enroll in full-time study at an accredited two-year or four-year college in the U.S.

A total of $20,000 will be awarded to four outstanding student athletesso get on the fast track to higher education with the Verizon Youth Progress Award program. See below for an application and full eligibility requirements.

Applications are accepted from December 1, 2003 through February 15, 2004.

Eligibility Requirements

Scholarships will be presented to four high school seniors - two males and two females - during the 2003-2004 academic year. The Verizon Youth Progress Award will consist of a $5,000 scholarship, to be used to offset the cost of a first-year college tuition, as well as a collection of select USATF apparel and memorabilia.

The winners of the scholarship will be selected based on their academic performance, participation in the sports of track & field or cross country and letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches or guidance counselors. Applicants must also reside in a market served by Verizon or Verizon Wireless (combined service areas compose 90% of US population). The student athletes must also have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA (grade point average) for their first three years of high school and the first semester of their senior year. The selection process will be administered by the Scholarship America, SA, Saint Peter, Minnesota.

The scholarship application process will begin on December 1, 2003 and conclude on February 15, 2004. Scholarship applications will be available online beginning in December.
