2006 Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team - Junior Team Selection Procedure

USATF's Mountain Ultra Trail Council (MUT) Announces Selection Criteria for 2006 Team

The 2006 Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team will travel to Bursa, Turkey to compete in the 22nd World Mountain Running Trophy Race in September. The junior squad, (eligible to athletes under 20 years of age in the year of competition) will compete on Saturday, September 10. The junior men (three scoring/four maximum) race an 8.5km uphill course with a total 895m ascent and 30m descent (same course as senior women). The junior women (two scoring/three maximum) race 3.4km with 395m of elevation gain.

All Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team members must be current USATF members. For team consideration, the junior athlete:

  • Must have posted a 16:45 or better (junior men) and 19:30 or better (junior women) in a 5km road or cross country event. (Equivalent times will be considered for distances other than 5km.)

  • Should have experience running (in training and preferably racing) on uphill courses similar to the event.

  • Must be mature, motivated, with a positive attitude to proudly represent the United States and sponsors internationally, under the rules of USATF and the event governing bodies.

  • A letter of recommendation from a coach, parent, or mentor-runner must accompany the athlete resume.

Resumes (including road, trail, track, and cross country results and current training info) will be accepted through August 10. Team members will be announced by August 15, 2006.

  • Each Teva U.S. Mountain Running Team Member receives the following:

  • Official Team apparel supplied by SportHill

  • Teva footwear

  • Airline ticket to Istanbul, Turkey, or up to $500 - whichever is less

  • Lodging and meals for the 4-night/5-day stay in Bursa (including transportation to and from Istanbul to Bursa, Turkey)

This will be the fifth year that the Teva US Mountain Running Team will field a full junior team. New last year were running blogs set up at www.youthrunner.com  by Youth Runner magazine. The juniors participated in the blogging after they were named to the team and provided updates before, during, and after their trip to New Zealand. This year we will again work with Youth Runner and our juniors to make this program a successful one and hopefully get more juniors interested in the U.S. mountain running program.

The MUT Council looks forward to selecting an even stronger group of young athletes this year. Dave Dunham has been named Junior Team Manager taking the reins from Tom Borschel who was team manager for the past two years. Dunham has competed for the U.S. at seven World Mountain Running Trophy events finishing on the podium in 1993 as a silver medalist and as the top U.S. finisher six times. He has also been a manager of the men's team. He is a race director for both mountain and snowshoe races and was the organizer of the USATF New England Mountain Running Circuit for seven years (1996-2002). Diversified as an athlete, Dunham has also been on two 100km World Cup Teams, he was an Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier, and is a national 24-hour Rogaining Champion.

"I look forward to coaching, recruiting, and managing the Junior Team at the 2006 World Trophy. I'm honored to have been selected for this position. This will be my first foray into handling the needs of the Junior Team but I am confident that my experiences at the World Trophy since 1992 will enable me to get the juniors to the starting line well prepared. It has been great to see the team grow since 1997 when the U.S. first fielded juniors (though not a full squad), and I look forward to the continued growth of the team," said Dunham.
