Grant Guidelines

What we fund

The USA Track & Field Foundation is committed to increasing access to and participation in the sport of track and field, long distance running and race walking in the United States. Our primary areas of funding include:

  • Youth Programs: Exposing more young people to the benefits of track & field and supporting participation at major youth events. Please use the USATF Grant Inquiry Application (PDF) to apply for a youth grant. The Foundation also proudly supports the Mark Springer Youth Travel Grant Program (separate application required).
  • Masters Programs: Expanding existing masters events and programs and improving access to them.
  • Elite Programs: Promoting the development of Team USA, the World's #1 Track & Field Team through the USATF Foundation Elite Athlete Development Grant (PDF) and other programs.
  • Officials: Helping to attract and train the next generation of the world's best officials.
  • Coaches: Expanding coaching education curricula and providing scholarships to deserving coaches.
  • Zero Tolerance Plan: Supporting USATF's anti-doping movement, the Zero Tolerance Plan, including the youth-oriented "Be A Champion" program.

Who we fund

The USATF Foundation awards grants to organizations that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, schools recognized by a state authority, members of USATF (for scholarships and similar programs), and USATF-member clubs (youth, open and masters). Other worthy organizations may apply, but are encouraged to become affiliated with USATF. Certain grants are made directly to individual elite athletes who meet specific criteria--see Elite Athlete Development Grant (PDF).

How to apply for a grant

Size of grants. The size of a grant primarily depends on its potential for impact.

Grant application. The USATF Foundation encourages eligible organizations to submit an inquiry application for programs that fit our mission and guidelines. Please print and complete the USATF Grant Inquiry Application (PDF). In addition, we ask that you submit an inquiry summary (no more than two pages in length) which covers at least the following:

  • A summary of your organization, including its mission, its relationship to USATF and its position in the sport of track and field. In addition, please include a separate attachment of your organizational chart which reflects senior management.
  • A description of the proposed project. This description should address whom the proposed project will serve. You are encouraged to describe your target base through such characteristics as gender, age, and socioeconomic level.
  • A summary as to what distinguishes your program both in your community and, when appropriate, on a national basis. Please assess the impact your program will have on the sport of track and field and outline the components that will measure your impact.
  • The specific amount of financial support requested.
  • A detail of the proposed program's budget (separate from the organizational budget requested in the Grant Inquiry Application) - please include this as a separate attachment.

We prefer inquiry summaries that are on the letterhead of the sponsoring organization.

Specialized grant applications. The Elite Athlete Development Grant (PDF) and the Mark Springer Youth Travel Grant have specialized applications.

Grant approval. If the inquiry summary fits within the scope of USATF Foundation funding priorities, sponsoring organizations will be contacted for further evaluation. Grant proposals will then be reviewed and considered by the USATF Foundation Board of Directors which meets two times a year (early February and mid-late June). While inquiry applications are welcome year-round, the deadline for final grant proposals in any given review period is 30 days prior to Board review. The entire grant application process will usually take less than six months.
