National Team Opportunity

Once again, USA Track & Field will be working with Nova International to field a national team for the Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country International Challenge.

We are happy to announce that this year, the competition will once again feature Team USA vs. Great Britain & Northern Ireland and along with a Senior Men’s team, the competition has expanded to include teams for Senior Women, Junior Men and Junior Women.

Team sizes and Selection Procedures are as follows:

Events Being Contested

  • Senior Men: 8 km (9 athletes)
  • Senior Women: 6km (9 athletes)
  • Junior Men: 6km (6 athletes)
  • Junior Women: 6km (6 athletes)

Selection for Senior Men & Women’s Races

  • Be a citizen of the United States and meet all other USATF and IAAF eligibility requirements
  • In order to be eligible to be a member of the Team, an athlete must be a USA Track & Field member in good standing.

The following procedures will be used to select senior athletes:

  1. Up to three (3) team spots will be filled by invitation from the meet director.
  2. A minimum of three (3) athletes who meet the eligibility requirements will select themselves onto Team USA for the Bupa Great Edinburgh International Cross Country via descending order of finish in the relevant event at the 2011 USATF Club National Cross Country Championships (hereafter known as the "selection event")
  3. Primary consideration for remaining/unfilled positions will be given to athletes who have achieved the current IAAF “A” standard for 5,000 and 10,000 meters (as well as 3000 meter steeplechase for women) and/or athletes who finished in the top-15 at the 2011 USA Cross Country Championships. If no qualified athletes (i.e., A standard and/or top 15 2011 USA XC) indicate interest, then the remainder of the team will be filled via descending order of finish at the selection event (see (2) above).

    • All athletes wishing to compete in the Bupa Great Edinburgh International Cross Country MUST report to National Team Processing with a U.S. passport valid through December 31, 2012. ATHLETES MUST STATE THEIR INTENT TO PARTICIPATE AT THE BUPA GREAT EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY AT TEAM PROCESSING DURING THE 2011 USATF CLUB NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS and complete all required USA National Team Processing forms. If no statement of intent is made during team processing on December 10, 2011, then the alternate will be offered the position.

  4. Athletes interested in selection for this team under (3) should contact Jim Estes (Jim.Estes@usatf.org) before December 4, 2011.

Selection for Junior Men & Women’s Races

Athletes and/or their coaches must nominate themselves no later than 12 midnight ET, Saturday, December 10.

The Selection Committee will evaluate the performances of all athletes who meet the above criteria, and will nominate six male and six female athletes from among this group to the International Competition Subcommittee of the Cross Country Council’s Executive Committee for final approval.

The Selection Committee shall consider performances at 2011 “national” cross country championships (e.g., USATF, NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, Foot Locker, and Nike Cross Nationals), as well as “national” qualifying events, state high school, and collegiate conference (including the NWAACC & CCCAA) cross country championships.
