Athlete Quotes - Men’s Decathlon Day 1

Trey Hardee

On his first day performance:
“It was middle of the road today. I wanted to hit some minimum marks out here today, not really trying to PR.”

On the more relaxed atmosphere:
“This year is so much more easy than last year (at the Trials). We had to make the team last year so the pressure was on.”

On looking forward to the Worlds:
“I’m not looking past the USAs here now, but I’m really excited to compete at the Worlds.”

Ashton Eaton

On his high jump effort:
“I feel alright. I was happy with the high jump.”

On what will be key tomorrow:
“Hurdles, and if I get a solid discus I think I’ll be alright. That’s where some athletes tend to fall off.”

On possibly winning here in Hayward:
“Winning would be huge. Getting on the scene, that’s big also. Either one I’ll take.”

On Clay’s withdrawal from the decathlon:
“It doesn’t change my focus, it just changes the top three I guess. It didn’t really change anything for me. He is a good competitor, and a good presence to have around, but it doesn’t affect my performance all that much.”

On his effort in the 400 meters:
“My 400 was not good, I don’t know what happened. I am usually a low 47 guy, and I just ran 48. I’m not very happy.”

On the wind during the 400:
“It was windy, but it was windy in Fayetteville (for the NCAA Championships) and I got a PR there. But I have to put it in perspective I guess.”
