Athlete Quotes - Women's Javelin Throw

Kara Patterson – Winner Women’s Javelin

On her winning throw:
“I expected something pretty big, but I have been expecting that all year. I’m really satisfied with the mark, but now I need more consistency.”

On her preparation for the World Championships:
“I knew going to the Olympics last year was going to be a learning experience, and now I feel more prepared for the Worlds.”

On her overall performance:
“I really struggled at the beginning of the competition. If I hadn’t thrown 52 (meters) on my third attempt I wouldn’t have even made the finals, so It was really up and down. I knew if I hit the block hard I would have a good throw, and when I let it go I didn’t think it was going to be that far, but I knew it was going to be good.”

On all my throws before that one (the fifth), my block leg was super bent and my chest was really down. I knew if I hit the block right, it would go far. I hit the block and it did go far. I didn't think it was 63.95 meters (209 feet, 9 inches). I thought it maybe went 60 (196-10) or 61 meters (200-1). I'm really happy with hitting the "A" standard. If I made the team with my mark from last year, I wouldn't have been satisfied. I was very happy to take the lead. I wanted to defend the national title.

(Note...her winning mark is a personal best.)

Rachel Yurkovich – Second Place Women’s Javelin

On taking third:
“I feel really good. I’m really happy with second. I get to go (to Worlds) and it will be fun to go to Berlin. It will be a really good experience.

On the wind:
“I’m used to it, the Hayward Field headwinds. But I was throwing really high and I couldn’t get away from that. I did my best with the conditions. I could have adjusted a few things but I’m really happy with what I did.”
