Athlete Quotes - Jr. Men's Decathlon Day 1
Curtis Beach
On his first day of decathlon events:
“Today was solid. Nothing extraordinary, nothing that blew my mind, but it was
solid. Solid performances are how you get a good decathlon score.”
His thoughts on his overall performance:
“I feel good. It’s not the best I’ve done, I have done better in other
decathlons, but I feel good. I’m happy with where I’m at and we’ll see what
happens tomorrow.”
On coming into the high jump:
“I was okay, the first two (jumps) were a little bit sub-par but still solid. I
wasn’t feeling amazing, but I still got a good high jump in. I had a little
scare, but then after that I got into a good rhythm and had a great bar. I’m
happy.”
On the 400 meters:
“It wasn’t that great. All my decathlon bests last year were better than the one
I just did, so I was expecting a bit better, but it’s okay. It’s still a solid
mark. I could have hoped for better, but that’s how the decathlon is, you’re
going to have great performances and not so great performances, so I’m happy.”
On the high jump:
“I knew just being at Hayward Field it would be really cool just to be here, and
I really felt that. In the high jump, when everyone was clapping and everyone
was looking at me, it was just amazing. I have seen Hayward on TV, but to be
here and experience it first hand was just amazing. I love the people in Eugene,
they are the best fans ever.”
On his future college plans:
“I am happy I am going to Duke, but I think I would have made a good Duck.”
On tomorrow’s events:
“Tomorrow is all I am thinking about right now. I am going to cool down and
focus on one event at a time and go for a PR. I am especially excited for the
1500.”
