Selection Procedures
- Selection to the USA Team for the 2008 IAAF World Race Walking Cup
(hereafter called the "Cup") will be based on the rank order of finish in
the World Cup Trials competitions (hereafter called the
"Trials"). The
Trials competition for the men's 50 km shall be on 2/9/2008 in Crandon
Park on Key Biscayne Island in Miami, Florida (U.S.
Olympic Team Trials - Men's 50 km Race Walk). The Trials competition
for the men's and women's open 20 km will be in Eugene, Oregon, on
Sunday, March 30, 2008 ("USA
Team Trials - IAAF World Race Walking Cup"). The junior 10 km will be on Sunday, April 6,
2008 in
Hauppauge, NY ("USA
Team Trials - IAAF World Race Walking Cup (Juniors)").
- Athletes will select themselves to the Cup team according to place of
finish in the Trials and meeting the performance standard established.
These standards must be met at the Trials race itself. The standards
are:
Men 50 km - 4:35:00
Men 20 km - 1:36:00
Women 20 km - 1:48:00
Junior Men 10 km - 49:00
Junior Women 10 km - 53:00
- Athletes must declare their desire to compete on the Cup team no later
than midnight on Tuesday, April 1, 2008. All athletes who complete a
Trials race under the standards in #2 are eligible and encouraged to
declare. Male athletes who complete a Trials race at both the 20 km and
50 km distance under the standards MUST indicate the distance at which
they would prefer to compete. They should also indicate whether they
would be willing to compete in the other distance if not selected for
their preferred distance. If an athlete who completed both Trials races
does not indicate a preferred distance, the 50 km will be assumed to be
his preferred distance.
- When declaring their intent to compete, the athletes must notify the Chair
of the RW Committee Vince Peters at (937) 767-7424 or via e-mail at mv_tc@sbcglobal.net.
The deadline is midnight, Tuesday, April 1, 2008.
- In naming the teams, the Chair will first go down the list of declared
athletes at 50 km in rank order of Trials finish. The first five (5)
qualified athletes who have indicated the 50 km as their preferred
distance will be placed on the initial 50 km roster.
- Next, the Chair will go down the list of declared athletes at 20 km in
rank order of Trials finish. The first five (5) athletes who have
indicated the 20 km as their preferred distance will be placed on the
initial 20 km roster.
- Any athlete(s) who indicated the 20 km as their preferred distance but
were not named to the initial 20 km roster and finished ahead of an
athlete on the initial 50 km roster will replace the lowest placing
athlete(s) on the 50 km roster.
- If, as a result of step #6 and 7, there are any athletes who indicated
the 50 km as their preferred distance but are no longer on the 50 km
roster and finished ahead of an athlete on the 20 km roster, those
athletes will replace the lowest placing athlete(s) on the 20 km roster.
- Steps #6 and #7 will be repeated until there are no more athletes to
whom these steps apply. Any situation that is unable to be resolved
using these steps will be resolved by the Chair, in consultation with
the affected athletes and the Executive Committee. The resulting 20 km
and 50 km rosters will be named to the Cup team.
- For the women's 20 km the first five (5) declared Trials finishers in
rank order will be named to the Cup team.
- For the junior men's and women's 10 km the first three (3) declared
Trials finishers in rank order will be named to the Cup team.
- If, after going through the steps above, any team has fewer than five
(5)
named members (three for juniors), the Chair may, at his discretion, name
additional athletes to that team. This shall be done in consultation
with the Executive Committee and shall give primary consideration to
rank order of finish at the Trials.
- If any athlete withdraws from a team after being named to it, but before
midnight on April 10, 2008, the Chair shall use the procedures outlined
in Steps 4 through 11 to name replacement athletes. If an athlete
withdraws after midnight on April 20, 2008, no replacement shall be
named unless the Chair in consultation with the Executive Committee
determines that doing so is in the best interests of the team. If they
so determine, the Chair in consultation with the Executive Committee,
shall name the replacement.
- Junior athletes must be at least 16 years of age on December 31, 2008
(born in 1989 thru 1992).
