Selection Procedures
- Selection to the 2007 Pan American Race Walking Cup (hereafter called
PAC) will be based on the rank order of finish in the Trials
competitions. The Trials competition for the men's 50 km shall be on
1/28/2007 in Chula Vista, California. The Trials competition for the
men's and women's open 20 km and junior 10 km shall be on 3/17/2007 in
Palmetto Bay (Miami), Florida.
- Athletes will be required to meet certain standards at the Trials races
in order to be selected for the team. These standards must be met at the
Trials race itself. The standards are:
Men's 50 km - 4:45:00
Men's 20 km - 1:36:00
Women's 20 km - 1:48:00
Junior Men's 10 km - 51:00
Junior Women's 10 km - 55:00
- Athletes must declare their desire to compete on the PAC team no later
than midnight on Tuesday, March 20, 2007. All athletes who complete a
Trials race under the standards in #2 are eligible and encouraged to
declare. Male athletes who complete a Trials race at both 20 km and 50
km under the standards MUST indicate the distance at which they would
prefer to compete and whether they would be willing to compete in the
other distance if not selected for their preferred distance. If an
athlete who completed both trials races does not indicate a preferred
distance, the 50 km will be assumed to be his preferred distance.
- When declaring their intent to compete, the athletes must notify the
Chair of the Race Walk Committee, Vince Peters - (937) 767-7424 or via
e-mail at mv_tc@sbcglobal.net (Deadline is midnight, Tuesday, March
20th, 2007).
- In naming the teams, the chair will first go down the list of declared
athletes at 50 km in rank order of trials finish. The first five
qualified athletes who have indicated the 50 km as their preferred
distance will be placed on the initial 50 km roster. The travel of first
four athletes will be funded by USATF.
- Next, the chair will go down the list of declared athletes at 20 km in
rank order of trials finish. The first five athletes who have indicated
the 20 km as their preferred distance will be placed on the initial 20
km roster. The travel of first four athletes will be funded by USATF.
- Any athlete who indicated the 20 km as their preferred distance but was
not named to the initial 20 km roster and finished ahead of an athlete
on the initial 50 km roster will replace the lowest placing athlete(s)
on the 50 km roster.
- If, as a result of step #6, there are any athletes who indicated the 50
km as their preferred distance but are no longer on the 50 km roster and
finished ahead of an athlete on the 20 km roster, those athletes will
replace the lowest placing athlete(s) on the 20 km roster.
- Steps #6 and #7 will be repeated until there are no more athletes to
whom these steps apply. Any situation that is unable to be resolved
using these steps will be resolved by the Chair, in consultation with
the affected athletes and the Executive Committee. The resulting 20 km
and 50 km rosters will be named to the PAC team.
-
- For the women's 20 km, the first five declared trials finishers
in rank order will be named to the team. The travel of the first
four will be funded by USATF.
- For the junior men's and women's 10 km, the first three
declared trials finishers in rank order will be named.
- If after going through the steps above, any team has fewer than five
named members, the chair may at his discretion name additional athletes
to that team. This shall be done in consultation with the Executive
Committee and shall give primary consideration to rank order of finish
at the trials.
- If any athletes withdraw from a team after being named to it, but before
midnight on 3/27/2007, the chair shall use the procedures outlined in
Steps 4 through 10 to name replacement athletes. However, no athlete who
has been named to the team and not withdrawn shall be subsequently
removed from the team as a result. If an athlete withdraws after
midnight on 3/27/2007, no replacement shall be named unless the Chair in
consultation with the Executive Committee determines that doing so is in
the best interests of the team. If they so determine, the Chair in
consultation with the Executive Committee shall name the replacement,
giving primary consideration to the rank order of trials finish.
