Selection Procedures - Track & Field Revised 6/22/07 The scenarios included are for illustration only and do not represent all possible scenarios. Athletes who have questions about the procedures should contact the Men's and Women's Track & Field Chairs: Stephanie Hightower, Women's Chair - 614-774-4736 Philosophy The philosophy of USATF is to send the maximum number of athletes allowed by IAAF rules. The maximum team size is 138 plus our 5 reigning World Champions if they elect to compete, for a total of 143. USATF's selection process is designed to have athletes select themselves in individual events. As it relates to relay events, the selection process provides the World Championships coaches with the discretion necessary to select the best possible relay team. Selection Criteria The following criteria will be used to nominate athletes to the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in individual events:
World Championships "A" or "B" Standard: The top Ranked Order Finishers who have achieved the "A" or "B" standard by the end of their event at the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be nominated to the 2007 World Championships team provided they meet the IAAF entry requirements below. Per IAAF rules:
Athletes in the top four (4) Rank Order of Finish who have only met the "B" qualifying standard will be allowed to chase the "A" standard until August 1, 2007. If more than one "B" standard remain in the top four (4) after August 1, 2007, the next "A" qualifier will be added to the team, taking the place of the lowest-placed "B" standard athlete. Relays Up to 6 athletes may be entered in a relay; these six must include all athletes (up to the 4th reserve) eventually entered in the respective individual events (100m and 400m). Reigning World Champions In addition to the above, USATF may enter the Reigning World Champion regardless of whether he/she has achieved the corresponding entry standard. Other Requirements
Possible Selection Scenarios Scenarios listed below are based on the top 8 finishers in any final. Scenario I Scenario I represents a situation where a "B athlete" finishes 4th. As prescribed by USATF's selection procedures, all 4 athletes would be nominated to the team.
If one of the four selected drops out, the replacement athlete would be the next "A" standard athlete in rank order finish. Scenario II Scenario II represents a situation where two (2) "B" standard athletes are in the top 4.
If one of the four selected drops out, the replacement athlete would be the next "A" standard athlete in rank order finish. Scenario III Scenario III represents a situation where two (2) "A" standard athletes, one (1) " B" standard athlete, and a non-standard athlete are in the top 4.
Scenario IV In Scenario IV, the next placing "B" qualified athlete becomes the replacement athlete.
