Athlete Quotes - Day 2 Jarod Swehosky (Salem, Ore.) 17-years-old Young Men's 5,000m Race Walk champion On missing the record by four seconds: "It was tough, I was really hoping to break the record, but it was still a good race. I just wanted to go out hard but my first and second laps were ten seconds too fast, but I still wanted to go for the record." On competing in the steeplechase: "I was really looking forward to the steeplechase but the heat really affected the pace. My first and second laps were strong but then the heat really got to me. I was still happy with my race, but I would have liked to get the record in both of my events." Devon Williams (Baltimore, Md.), World Youth Team member – anchored 4x800m relay On the race: "We were relaxed, and very confident coming into the race. Our main goal as a team was to go out hard, have fun, and try to break the record. I just wanted to help my team as much as possible because they all run with so much heart." Nicole Jones (Houston, Texas), World Youth team member – 4x800m relay "This is my last meet of the season and I have one more chance to do my best and get PRs in all of my events. I want to go for the gold in all of my events because there is no need to hold back." Alexandra Coppadge – Young Women's Heptathlon runner-up (4,804) On her strategy in the 800m: "I wanted to go out with the person who was in front and make Jaynie Goodbody have to run me down." On being ranked first: "I just needed to come prepared, focused, and ready to take one event at a time and hopefully come out on top." Jaynie Goodbody – Young Women's Heptathlon third-place (4,715) On her strategy going into the last event of the competition: "I knew I was tied for first with Alexandra going into the event and that she was a strong 800m runner, so I just wanted to try to keep up with her." On her preparation coming into the meet: "This is my last meet of a very long year so I just wanted to end my youth career on a good note going into college next year." Benjamin Davies (Nashville, Tenn.) – Intermediate Boys Decathlon winner (6,645) "Overall, I'm pretty happy with my finish. I never like to do bad in one event and I just wanted to hit it off in the end." Tim Wunderlich (Westminster, Md.) – Young Men's Decathlon winner (6,806) "My first day wasn't too good and I was a little disappointed going into the last event that day, but I talked to my coach that night and he said you can make little things out of each event. On day two, I just tried to PR in every event and I increased my intensity. I won this event last year and was going for a repeat…I cut it a little close but ended up winning and I'm pretty happy about it." Duane Hynes (Warrington, Pa.) – Young Men's Decathlon runner-up (6,722) On placing second: "I had a good decathlon overall and he (Wunderlich) is an awesome decathlete. He's better in the throws and I'm better in the jumps so it went back and forth. Going into the pole vault I knew I had to get as many points as possible because he's good at the javelin and we run similar 1,500 times…but if I had to lose to anyone I'm glad it was him (Wunderlich)." |
