Special Qualifying Options
Race Walks
For this year only, race walking athletes who reside more than 600 miles from
an indoor meet may qualify for the 2004 USA Indoor Track & Field
Championships based on an outdoor time.
Those athletes using an outdoor time will ONLY be used to fill the field
to 10 athletes.
If 10 athletes have made the qualifying standard indoors, no athletes using
outdoor times will get in. If 6 athletes qualify with indoor times, then the
first four athletes with outdoor qualifying times will be admitted. Even if
athletes #5 and #6 on the outdoor list have times faster than the indoor
qualifying standard, they will not be added to the field.
Outdoor times may be used as qualifying times for the Indoor Championships
if:
- The qualifying race is conducted outdoors on a 400-meter track and is at
the same distance that will be contested indoors (5000m for men and 3000m
for women).
- The race is sanctioned, with a minimum of 3 starters of the same gender
and appropriate judging in accordance with USATF rules.
- The outdoor mark must be submitted to the Race Walking Chair or his
designee (Steve Vaitones) prior to 2/15/04 at 5:00 p.m. ET (the posted
on-time entry deadline for the Indoor Championships).
- For validation purposes, the mark should be accompanied by the name and
phone number of the Chief Race Walking Judge.
- Athletes must also enter online
prior to the on-time entry deadline (2/15/04 at 5:00 p.m. ET).
- Athletes using an outdoor time for qualifying are not eligible for travel
funds based upon those outdoor times.
- Once entered, those athletes cannot be bumped out of the field by
subsequent athletes who qualify based on indoor marks made after the on-time
entry deadline.
On the day after the cut-off for on-time entries (February 16th), the field
for the Indoor Championships will be filled to 10 from the validated outdoor
mark list, and those athletes will be notified.
