Eligibility Requirements

In addition to correctly entering the meet and having equaled or bettered the qualifying standard during the stated qualifying periods, the following criteria must also be met:

  • Only citizens of the United States who are eligible to represent the United States in an Olympic competition under United States Olympic Committee and International Olympic Committee rules are eligible to compete in the Olympic Trials. Athletes who have citizenship questions should contact Jill Pilgrim, USATF's general counsel.
  • Athletes may enter even if they have not yet met the qualifying standard. However, athletes will not be permitted to compete unless they have:
    1. Completed the entry process
    2. Met the entry standard by July 1, 2004
    3. Completed the declaration process
    4. An updated athlete location form on file with USADA prior to competition if they are in the Out-Of-Competition (OOC) Drug-Testing Pool
  • All athletes must be 2004 members of USATF in good standing. USATF memberships may be purchased online, through your local Association Office, or by calling the USATF National Office at 317-261-0478 x345.
  • In accordance with the Amateur Sports Act, the USOC Constitution, and USATF rules, USATF will accept the entry into the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field of any eligible athlete who has not been convicted of a doping violation and who is not currently suspended from the sport.

If the IAAF or U.S. Anti-Doping Agency suspend an athlete prior to the commencement of the athlete's event(s) at the Olympic Trials, USATF will follow existing USATF Board policy, and the athlete will not be permitted to compete in the Olympic Trials.

Note: Athletes who attain the Olympic Trials "B" standard will be included in the event only if additional competitors are needed to fill the stated field size (i.e., not enough athletes have attained the "A" standard)
