2003 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships
The National Club Championships featured the top clubs from across the United States as they vied for top honors and bragging rights as the nations top cross country team. More than 500 competitors were on hand for the event that also served as the USA Open Mens 10 km, Open Womens 6 km and Masters 10 km Championships. A total of 23 teams scored in the mens club competition. Hansons-Brooks (Michigan) won for the third consecutive year, placing all five scoring runners among the top twelve finishers overall and totaling 30 points in the team scoring. Wisconsin Running Team (Wisconsin) (49 points) followed in second place with 49 points, while Farm Team (Pacific) claimed third with 74 points. On the women's side, Farm Team (Pacific) defended their 2002 title with 40 points, while the Boston Athletic Association (New England) and newcomer adidas Raleigh TC (North Carolina) both scored 84 points, with the New England club earning the silver medal based on a 5th woman tie-breaker. Alan Webb (Nike), prepping for a spot on the 2004 Olympic team, and two-time NCAA Division III cross country champion Missy Buttry (Shenandoah, IA) won their first career U.S. open titles. Both the open mens and womens races featured dramatic, down-to-the wire battles, where Webb (30:13.1) edged the University of Arkansas three-time NCAA steeplechase champion Daniel Lincoln (Nike) by three-hundredths of a second (30:13.4) in winning the mens race, and Buttry (19:59.9) used a final burst at the end to win the womens title by just a couple strides over 2002 NCAA Division I cross country runner-up Kate ONeill (20.01.4). In the womens race, Buttry and ONeill ran side-by-side at the halfway point, leaving the remainder of the field behind. They continued their battle until the final 100 meters when Buttry, a junior at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, broke away at the end. |
