Athlete Quotes - Sunday Men's 400m Hurdles Eric Thomas - winner It's sweet. I worked really hard for this. As you mature as a 400 hurdler, you never stop learning. I didn't race as much this year, but I think that helped with my preparation and that's why it came together for me today. Bershawn Jackson - 2nd place I was very nervous because it was my first time competing against these guys who have been my idols that I always looked up to. It was hard for me coming off a hernia earlier this year, but I had the desire to win. Joey Woody - 3rd place I felt myself tightening up a little after the tenth hurdle, but I just told myself to relax and hang on. I just need to get more races under me to get ready for World Championships. It felt kind of good coming around the curve. Men's Pole Vault Jeff Hartwig - winner It's more of a relief than anything to be here. I am happy to have put together a solid performance. I was hoping to get higher today, and put on a good show for the fans. But the wind got tougher. I feel bad for the decathletes who are coming up. Derek Miles - 2nd place It was fine. I can say that I made the team. Technically, everything is starting to come together. I ran well. Men's 800m David Krummenacker - winner With my hamstring injury, I had no idea that I'd be running this weekend. I thought it was impossible. There's a lot of great American middle-distance runners right now that are on the verge of doing some great things. Khadevis Robinson - 2nd The race went well for me. Jonathon got out quick. He is a very sharp young runner. My turnover wasn't going as quick as it should have. I was thinking that he might be able to hold it. When I took off, David already had three steps ahead of me. We maintained the same pace. He beat me by three steps. I thought I could do better. But right now, David is the man. My hat is off to him. Jonathon Johnson - 3rd I wanted to run 50 or 51 to start. I wanted to come out hard and stay in the front and then hang on for the end. Women's 100m Hurdles Gail Devers - winner I got injured at the Penn Relays. I was out for three week. I got in the 100 meters for the speed work. These were a long four days. I still have a lot of work to do. The competition is very hard. I remember getting a medal in this event at the 1991 Worlds. I was there with two East Europeans on the medal stand and I felt like the Lone Ranger. Now, we are starting to dominate the world. Miesha McKelvey - 2nd place I'm excited to make the team. I remember the first time when I made the team (in 1999). I was very young. With the strength of the hurdlers here (in America), I feel fortunate to make the team. If I finished fifth and competed well, I would have been very happy. Jenny Adams - 3rd place I am so happy to have made the team. We have the most competitive hurdlers in the history of the U.S. To run 12.70 and not make the team in unbelievable and it's unfortunate that only three people can qualify for the team. I will pursue the long jump. I will jump in Rome and Germany. Women's 200m Kelli White - winner I wanted to come here and double. I am happy to have taken both titles. I wanted this so badly. I cried tears of joy, instead of last year when I cried tears of pain last year. I hope to have (training partner) Chryste (Gaines) on the relay team. Allyson Felix I am very excited to have made the team. I was very prepared. In the semifinal, my left hamstring started to cramp up in the last 50 meters. I got a lot of work on the hamstring after the semifinal. I thank the lord to have made the team. Torri Edwards I am happy to have made the team in the 100 and 200. The 200 is not my best race. I am starting to become a 200-meter runner. I would love to run on the relay team. I was just focused on my own race. I knew they were coming. I concentrated on coming down the stretch. Men's 200m Maurice Greene (scratched out of men's 200 meters) As I've said all along, you're either ready to run or you're not. Running the curve is tough and (coach) John Smith would not let me get out to run. He said 'just prepare to run the 100 meters and forget this.' He has his reasons. I'll run the 100 meters in Lausanne this week. Darvis Patton - winner I'm very pleased with the win. I was number one last year, but most people didn't know that. I'm just going to enjoy the win now and get ready for World's. When you have guys like (John) Capel and Josh Johnson, you have to come out fast. I know if I could be in the lead or in the mix, I could hold on and win. Women's 800m Jearl Miles-Clark I didn't want to take the lead. I wanted to wait and draft and then make my move later in the race. I executed the plan my coach had for me. Nicole Teter My basic plan was to finish in the top three. Jearl is an incredible runner and she ran a great race. I wanted someone else to take the lead and block the wind. I didn't want to get passed the last 800 meters. Women's High Jump Amy Acuff - winner I was more nervous than I'd been in a while. My foot was a little bit tight, so I was trying to watch that. I'm just happy to be going to Paris. Tisha Waller - 2nd place We had to adjust with the wind today. It affects your approach, but some times you just have to go. Gwen Wentland - 3rd place Maybe I'm not physically at my peak, but mentally I am. I know what I need to do. I'm going over to Europe for a couple of Grand Prix's. I'm aiming for World Championships. I want to come back with a medal from there. I know I'm capable of doing that. Men's Triple Jump Kenta Bell - winner It was my best jump of the year, but I'm definitely capable of a bigger one. I'm still working on some mechanical things. Today I just wanted to be competitive and do whatever it took to win. At Worlds, I want to jump 59 feet because that's what I think it will take to win there. Women's Triple Jump Yuliana Perez - winner I had to work for this one. (On the thought process going into her final jump) I figured I was either going to make a foul or make it happen. I can't say if I'm going to medal (at the worlds), but you never know. Something can always happen. I will try my best. Men's 1,500m Jason Lunn - winner When Bryan (Berryhill) took off, I had to go with him. We all know that to let him go too far will hurt us. At 200 meters, we started to put on the jets. At 50 meters, I felt another gear. To win here against guys like these is very pleasing. Decathlon Tom Pappas - winner I'm relatively healthy and I am on a real high after this meet. I think it's going to take this score to win at the worlds. My goal was to make it on the world team and win. I didn't have a goal for points. I am very pleased. After the long jump, I thought I had a chance for a big score. Bryan Clay - 2nd place I didn't open up today the way I wanted to. There were a lot of little disappointments. I thought my chance at a big score was over after the discus, but I had a great support group supporting me. The guys out here that are competing are like a family. You want everyone else to do well, but you want to do well yourself, so that's very special. |
