2002 USA vs. Canada Junior Race Walk Match
August 18, 2002
Thirteen members of the USA Junior National Racewalk Team will compete in the 14th annual USA vs. Canada Junior Match on Sunday, August 18, in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The team is made up of the top six finishers from the USA Junior Track & Field Championships, held June 21 in Palo Alto, CA, and one at-large selection.
This year's match is being held in conjunction with the Sallie Mae 10K which is also the USATF Open National 10 km Championships. This will afford the junior athletes with strong competition and should result in fast times.
The dual match, started in 1989, is an opportunity for juniors to get an introduction to international competition in a low-key and supportive atmosphere. The meet alternates between U.S. and Canadian sites; it returns to Wilkes-Barre, site of the 2001 meet, after having run in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 1999 and 2000. The men's and women's races are scored separately and the totals added to give the overall team winner. The U.S. has a three-year win streak on the line.
